Clues are special items featured in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. They are hidden books that give hints about various secrets in the game.

Description[]

Clues are (presumably ancient) books that each contains a hint about a secret in the game. These books are scattered throughout all the areas of the game, whether they are outdoor areas, inside of houses in towns, or even within mansions.

Each book is hidden behind a breakable wall that must be destroyed in order to uncover it. As with all items hidden this way in the game, having equipped Dracula's Eyeball will reveal their location (in fact, it's no longer necessary to break the blocks that contain them, they can be collected just by touching them).

Clues aren't mandatory items required to complete the game, they just give hints. Unlike villagers, which sometimes can provide false information, these books always tell the truth, although they are usually written in a cryptic way and it's up to the player to decipher and make sense of the riddle each poses. At least this was the case in the original Japanese versions of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, as most of their texts were heavily modified during the English localization, and some of them ended not making sense anymore.
