Synopsis[]

Plot[]
Boston Massachusetts, 1783[]
Julia Belmont takes her son, Richter, through the city at night. She's taking him to the port so he can board a ship to France to live with his aunt. Richter objects because he wants to stay behind and fight evil like a proper member of the Belmont Clan. Julia argues that Richter will be safer with her sister and tells him to stop arguing. She kneels down before him and embraces her son, explaining that she has no choice and is sorry for sending him away.
The heartfelt moment between mother and son is interrupted by a vampire named Olrox. Julia tells Richter to get to the ship, but he stays behind and boasts the vampire will be slain by his mother. Olrox claims nobody has defeated him in over two hundred and fifty years despite making the same claims. Julia repeats for Richter to leave, and while he leaves her side, he doesn't go to the ship as he's told. Instead, he hides behind some boxes and watches Julia fight against Olrox.
As a descendant of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, Julia wields the vampire killer whip and the ability to use Speaker magic. She overpowers Olrox one-on-one, striking him with the whip and then lighting him on fire. While this would be enough to defeat an ordinary vampire, Olrox survives and morphs into a serpent form. Richter interferes and uses magic to strike Olrox in a futile attempt to protect his mother. This forces Julia to handicap herself and shield her son. She's struck from behind and pinned to the ground without her whip. Julia does her best to hold the serpent off, but Olrox eventually breaks her shield and pierces her chest. Julia apologizes to Richter just before she perishes, dying right in front of her son.
Richter is horrified by his mother's death, as she lays in a pool of her own blood. Olrox reverts to his humanoid form and reveals that he killed Julia only because she killed someone he loved. He loved that person as much as Richter loved his mother. Olrox claims to know how Richter feels and decides not to kill him that night and leaves him to die another day.
After his harsh parting words, Olrox leaves and steps over Julia's body. Richter cries for a few moments before grabbing the vampire slayer whip and fleeing the city as he was originally told.
The Vendée (Western France), 1792[]
Nine years later, Richter Belmont is an accomplished vampire hunter who lives with his "aunt" Tera and her daughter Maria. He is also a member of the French revolutionaries who are standing up to the Church and the rich, the very places where vampires are hiding in high places. Maria is the leader of the local revolutionaries and she holds a meeting in the forest with her fellow rebels and encourages them to stand up and fight back, just as the Americans in the New World have.
The meeting is suddenly interrupted by three vampires bearing strong brands on their bodies. Richter quickly steps up and slays one of them with the vampire slayer whip he inherited from his mother. Maria summons bird-like familiars to fight as well. The two remaining vampires are soundly defeated and one of them claims Richter will be slain by the "Vampire Messiah", also known as the "Devourer of Light". Richter dismisses these statements, claiming they make no sense, and then beheads the vampire. Maria says this might explain why there are more vampires around and states she believes they're gathering at the Château, meaning the Marquis is sheltering them.
After the meeting concludes and everyone returns to town, Richter suggests they talk to the Abbot. The Church is no friend to the revolution but Richter believes they're probably no friends of vampires either. Maria reluctantly agrees with his logic and Richter warns her not to display any "witch"-like abilities. They go to the church and meet Mizrak at the door, informing him about the Vampire Messiah. Richter and Maria warn the Abbot about the Devourer of Light, but he ultimately dismisses them and claims the Marquis is a pillar of the community. Maria fundamentally disagrees but the Abbot tells them he'll try and find out anything he can because they have a common enemy in evil.
Meanwhile, fellow rebel Jacques leaves a pub drunk and is attacked by a vampire. He's brought to the chateau, where numerous vampires are being harbored by the Marquis, who is a vampire himself. The Marquis and his wife drain Jacques of all his blood and leave his corpse in a pile of numerous bodies. At Tera's house, Maria eats dinner and talks about their meeting with the Church. Tera believes the Abbot is a good person. Richter falls asleep and has a nightmare about Olrox and his mother, but Maria wakes him up. Maria talks about how the rebels were listening tonight and Richter claims he wasn't. Apparently, he only hunts vampires because it's fun and makes light of the idea of fighting evil. However, Richter clarifies that he will always stand by Maria and Tera, regardless if he shares their beliefs.
This heartfelt moment is interrupted by the sudden appearance of several night creatures. Richter, Tera and Maria have no clue what these monsters are and engage them in battle. Unfamiliar with their movements and abilities, Richter struggles more than usual and Maria loses one of her familiars. Before they're completely overcome, two strangers arrive to save them. The duo is a man and a woman from the Caribbean sea and they recognize the monsters as night creatures, who haven't been seen for centuries. They introduce themselves as Annette and Edouard, and explain they've come in search of a Belmont to deal with the Vampire Messiah.
Nantes, Western France[]
Olrox arrives via ship and is greeted by a fellow vampire named Vaublanc bearing the robes with the same insignia as those who attacked Richter's group. Olrox thanks Vaublanc for meeting him but says he can find his own way. He walks off and tells him to inform the Messiah that he has arrived.
