The Abbey is a location featured in the Castlevania: Nocturne animated series. It is a modest abbey sitting at the center of Machecoul in France and which is managed by Abbot Emmanuel.
Overview[]
A modest old abbey sitting at the center of the mountain town of Machecoul in France, and which is managed by Abbot Emmanuel. Besides lending its service as a place for praying, the building also holds many terrible secrets. The main structure is comprised by a simple chapel and a bell tower. However, it also has a large cellar in its basement, as well as other secret rooms that are not accessible to the public. In the catacombs, the Abbot has settled his "Infernal Machine" - a large and complex contraption activated by energy gathered from Hell that can quickly transmogrify dead bodies into obedient night creatures.
The abbey also serves as the main headquarters of the "Knights of Saint John", a group of fierce and devoted warrior monks which the Abbot personally assembled, allegedly to protect and keep peace in the town, but most importantly, for his own protection and to work as his spies; with Mizrak, its main commander, serving as his personal guard.
The abbey acts as an important plot location in the series' narrative. It is there that the Abbot schemes all his plans and secretly negotiates with any questionable factions. The night creatures he creates are usually left in charge of the cellars, where they can also be restrained in cells should they dare disobey their master.
It is unknown when the abbey was built, but evidently, it is very old. It was built long before the Abbot and his monks came from Malta.[1] A secret underground passageway runs below the building, which goes all the way from the cellars to a nearby street, passing through a storage area. It can be accessed from the street end by pulling a chain hidden behind a fake brick, which mechanically opens a large trapdoor along the street, giving access to a long staircase down. According to Tera, the reason for the existence of both the cellars and the tunnel was to contain night creatures and protect the people.
