"This abomination is your Abbot's work. You can't stop this, Mizrak. She'll kill you, and that will be the end of it"
Olrox restraining Mizrak as they witness Drolta killing the Revolutionary Army

Angel of Death is the second episode of the second season, and the 10th episode overall, of the Netflix original series, Castlevania: Nocturne.

Synopsis[]

'Drolta's dark past unfolds as Alucard, Annette and Richter set out in search of Sekhmet's missing soul. Maria encounters her mother in her new form.

Plot[]

In 1199 CE, in Southern Egypt, inside the tomb of Sekhmet, Drolta stands before Sekhmet's coffin, her mummified corpse inside. She wavers on her ability to properly serve Sekhmet, citing her flaws and the limited number of others serving under Sekhmet.

Eventually, inside Sekhmet's tomb, a large group of people wait as Drolta compounds medicine for a young girl on a table until a group of bandits arrive. They shock and scare everyone as the bandits proceed to massacre all who get in their way. As the crowd flees in terror, Drolta spots a scythe and tries to fetch it but is taken out by a bandit and later awakens, surrounded by blood and corpses. Horrified by the scene, Drolta heads down into Sekhmet's tomb, and discovers that Sekhmet's corpse had been pilfered. Tearfully, Drolta prays for a way to become stronger, vowing to do whatever it takes.

Hearing a noise from upstairs, Drolta finds a vampire feeding on the corpse of one of the former priestesses. Spotting Drolta, the vampire attacks Drolta, who retaliates, but is restrained in a chokehold by the vampire. Noticing the statue holding out a pointed sword, Drolta hits the vampire and redirects it to the sword's point, which impales it. Now free from the vampire's grasp, Drolta notes how the vampire's presence answered her prayers; however, the vampire taunts Drolta, calling her a feeble woman who serves a weak goddess of healing. Pertinent to the vampire's last comment, Drolta rebuts that Sekhmet isn't only the goddess of healing, but also war. She then decapitated the vampire and, using a golden chalice, drinks the vampire's blood, causing her to transform into one herself.

In the present, Alucard, Annette, and Richter walk to Juste's home, as Alucard explains the story surrounding Sekhmet's corpse being stolen.

Reaching Juste's home, they find it up in flames. As Alucard and Richter check on the burning home, Annette spots a humanoid figure shaped in light across the lake. It disappears when Richter runs past the light figure to check on the unconscious Juste floating in the nearby lake. Surprisingly, Richter discovers that the corpse of a vampire and the real Juste is close by and gives a snide remark to Richter. Alucard gives his own snide remark toward Juste, who initially was glad to see him, then notes that his presence bodes trouble. Just talks to the group about the recent eclipse and how it stirred up the local vampires, which Alucard notes it was spell cast by Erzsebet Báthory.

Meanwhile, at the Vendée, Drolta tries out her new night creature body, which is now immune to sunlight. Her actions amuse Erzsebet, who watches from the building's shade. Hidden from view, Olrox observes their interactions. Drolta mentions how the last eclipse Erzsebet cast has taken a greater toll on her, and Erzsebet vows revenge against Alucard, and Drolta notes that he's leading them to her soul.

Returning to Juste's side, a vampire spies on the group, where Juste learns he cannot accompany Richter's group to Paris. Richter claims it's because Erzsebet is still in Machecoul, and so he can prevent Maria from doing anything drastic. Although Juste is unconfident, he can reason with Maria. Richter motivates him to do so, citing that he owes it to Tera. Annette and Alucard watch as the Belmonts chat, and Annette learns a bit about Alucard's history with the clan from him. Alucard then says they must go and tells Annette that if he cannot defeat Erzsebet, then Richter must. The group then takes their leave after Richter hugs Juste goodbye.

At Machecoul, marks of Erzsebet's cult were painted on various parts of the buildings in town. Maria and Mizrak walked through it, and some locals shunned them. Maria finds it perplexing as she's known them all her life, and one person wielding a pitchfork toward her triggers her enough to try and cast a spell, but Mizrak stops her. They then witness a group of protesters heading toward the camp of the National Guard, whereas Maria warns the Captain of the National Guard but notes she's an obstinate fool. Mizrak then notices a lady reporting them to two guards and suggests they move quickly to her house to collect her supplies.

Mizrak waited outside Tera's house as Maria collected some of her belongings inside her room until Tera appeared before her. Tera assured Maria not to be afraid of her, but the terrified Maria cited Richter's statement that she was no longer her mother. Stoically, Tera questions that, and Maria asks if it hurt when Erzsebet transformed her, but Tera deflects the question, citing she was trying to protect her to save her from such a fate. Maria then asks what it's like now, and Tera explains her experience and thoughts as a vampire. It was Tera's comment about her listening to her heart as a child, and now she can clearly hear Tera's heartbeat from a distance. As Tera slowly approaches Maria, Mizrak enters the room, and upon seeing Tera touching Maria's face, Mizrak attacks Tera. Maria asks Mizrak to stop, but he argues that she's a vampire now; the comment makes Tera and Maria tearful. He follows up by stating that she's incapable of love; however, Maria rebuts that "five minutes ago", he worked for her father in creating night creatures. Irked by the rebuttal, Tera leaves the room, and Maria follows.

Back at Juste's home, Juste wipes off debris from his intact chest and opens it, revealing an old red outfit. He later heads to Machecoul and visits the grave of his deceased wife Lydie Erlanger Belmont. Kneeling in front of her grave, Juste apologizes to Lydie for not bringing her any flowers. He goes on to state that he's rejoining the fight, and from a secret switch on the nearby chapel, Juste reclaims a silver ring with a blue gem embedded into it.

Richter's group reaches a river, where Alucard states that they'll be heading down from there on out, he suggests they gather any supplies they'll need for the trip. He also warns them that they're likely being followed and notes his displeasure of being followed. Richter joyfully asks if Alucard will display his flying sword skills, but Alucard ignores the comment and states he'll fetch a boat. Richter's reaction to Alucard's answer makes Annette hold back a chuckle. Richter asks Annette to gather while he hunts but allows her to hunt, too, if she pleases. Annette stated she'd gather mushrooms, and Richter told her he'd hunt for rabbits.

At the Vendée, Erzsebet, alongside Drolta, has an audience with Olrox, and Erzsebet claims that her "Dragon" has returned. Drolta approaches Olrox, and he compliments her new appearance as miraculous. She asks where he's been, and he claims that it was doing reconnaissance work. When questioned about any findings concerning Alucard, Richter, the witches, or the traitorous warrior monk, he notes that he hasn't found anything. Erzsebet requests for more corpses for the Infernal Machine, and Olrox agrees to gather more; however, Drolta offers to do it immediately, earning her a pensive glare from Olrox.

Carrying a bowl of mushrooms, Annette regroups with Richter, who couldn't catch a single rabbit. Smiling for a moment, it was wiped away by the presence of ancestral souls surrounding the area, one of whom had a clear human form. Richter asks what was wrong, but Annette brushes it off. As Richter talks to Annette about Edouard, the human-formed one approaches Annette and shocks her as his eye pops out, making her grab Richter's hand in fear. The two of them blush, and Richter shyly compliments the area. Annette lets go of Richter's hand and walks away while Richter goes to hunt rabbits again.

Elsewhere, Alucard locates a boat with four fly-ridden corpses inside; he carefully removes them from the boat and apologizes that he doesn't have the time to bury them properly. As Richter tries to hunt a rabbit, he's ambushed by a vampire who steals his whip and hands it over to another vampire comrade of his. Another heavily armored vampire appears, and Richter fights them using his magic. Amid this, Annette uses her magic to protect Richter from a gunshot fired by the vampire leader. After Richter incinerates the heavily armored vampire, they separate. Annette deals with the vampire who stole Richter's whip, and Richter deals with the vampire leader, who escapes after learning their destination from the boastful Richter. Before Richter can retaliate, he's forced to finish the burning, heavily armored vampire who charged toward him.

Returning to the river, Annette mocks Richter for revealing their destination to the vampires, and Richter apologizes for his hubris. Annette suggests not telling Alucard about the vampires being privy to their destination, but about being unable to catch any rabbits as he's seen rowing the boat down the river in the distance.

By dusk, Mizrak walks alone down a road and spots Drolta flying in the sky. Shocked by this revelation, he follows her to where the fight between the human cult followers attacks the National Guard's base camp. The Captain stands on the frontlines and frustrates the people on their side. Just as the Captain orders her men, Drolta appears behind them and orders her men to stay in formation as they fire at Drolta, but to no effect. Drolta proceeds to slaughter the National Guard soldiers as Mizrak rushes to the area, only to be stopped by Olrox and told that Drolta was his Abbot's work. As Drolta rips off the head of a soldier, the Captain tries to stab Drolta with her Sabre, but it breaks into splinters upon impact. Olrox then consoles the tearful Mizrak, stating he'd die if he tried to help them. Drolta strangles the Captain with one hand and tells her that it would have been wise if she had run.
