The Axe Knight is a common armored knight that uses an Axe as its primary weapon. Most Axe Knights attack by throwing the axe (usually called Axe Knights or Axe Armors), which then returns to them, or more rarely, is thrown in an arc. Others may hack with the axe. Some varieties can do both (such as the Old Axe Armor). Axe Knights also commonly hold shields, making them tougher to defeat, and may block some attacks. A playable version of this enemy is available in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (see Old Axe Armor).

In the early platform sidescrolling adventures, the Axe Armor could throw axes horizontally at either a head level elevation or at a leg level elevation. Both elevations offer the player a chance to avoid being hit by ducking or jumping respectively.

There are a few special varieties of Axe Armor, including the Double Axe Armor, which throws two axes at a time, and the Red Axe Armor, which reassembles when destroyed (similar to the classic Red Skeleton enemy).
