The Barbarian is an enemy in Castlevania: Bloodlines.

Origins[]

Barbarian - 01

The Huns at the Battle of Chalons by Alphonse de Neuville (1836–85).

A barbarian is a human who is perceived to be either uncivilized or primitive. In idiomatic or figurative usage, a "barbarian" may also be an individual reference to a brutal, cruel, warlike, insensitive person.

The term originates from the Greek: βάρβαρος (barbaros). In ancient times, the Greeks used it mostly for people of different cultures. In the early modern period and sometimes later, Greeks used it for the Turks, in a clearly pejorative way.

During the Roman Empire, the Romans used the word "barbarian" for many people, such as the Germanics, Celts, Gauls, Iberians, Thracians, Parthians, and Sarmatians.

Description[]

Ancient warriors that still battle among the Greek ruins of the Atlantis Shrine. They come armed with a spiked mace and wear a domed helmet with a peculiar design. They attack by performing long lunges with their weapons. When hit on the helmet, they'll take medium damage and be knocked back a little, canceling their attacks. If hit on an unprotected part of the body, they'll take full damage (a fully powered weapon will take them out in a single hit).

While not being particularly resilient, they are often found obstructing strategic spots where it's hard to hit them. In these cases, it is advisable to take them out with ranged attacks, like sub-weapons or a Mystical Attack.

Trivia[]

  • This enemy is reminiscent to concept art of the scrapped character Bolt Ericson from Castlevania: Bloodlines; domed helmet, muscular and wielding a spiked mace. It is possible that after being scrapped, Bolt's design was repurposed to create the Barbarian.
