Biphron, also known as Lossoth or Lightkeeper, is an enemy in the Castlevania series. He is a demon who lights magical torches on dark graveyards and is also said to know much wise lore.

Origins

Bifrons - 01

Illustration of Bifrons from the Dictionnaire Infernal (1863).

In demonology, Bifrons is a demon, Earl of Hell, with sixty legions of demons under his command. He first appears in the form of a monster, but at the command of those who summon him, changes his shape into that of a man. He is supposed to make one knowledgeable in astrology, geometry, and other sciences and arts, as well as teaching the virtues of precious stones, woods and herbs.

He takes corpses from their graves and deposits them into new ones. He also sometimes puts magic lights above graves, which in turn appear like candles.

In the US version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Bifrons' name was changed to Lossoth. In Tolkien's lore, the Lossoth were a race of snowmen of Forochel who could glide on ice by tying bones to their feet, made their houses of snow and possessed "carts without wheels", probably sleighs. It is unclear why Bifrons, a demon who is particularly related to fire, was renamed to a race of snow dwelling people.

Description

While his appearance and slow pacing may hint otherwise, Biphron can be an annoying enemy to deal with (more so if they come in numbers) and it is recommended to dispatch them as soon as they are encountered. If the player allows him to attack first, he will unleash fountains of flames or three fireballs in an arcing pattern which will fall at different distances between each other. These attacks will be launched sporadically and unpredictably, which may end in a quick barrage of them combined together, sometimes covering most of the screen and leaving little time or space to evade. When defeated, they drop their lantern and are set alight, walking a bit before collapsing to the ground.

Even if all of his attacks are Fire-based, they don't particularly inflict serious damage, although they may stun the player in place and leave them open to attacks from other enemies.
