The Bitterfly, referred to as Chonchon in Japan, is an enemy in the Castlevania series. It is a mutated, butterfly-like insects that uses invisibility as its cloak and weapon.

Origins

Chonchons are mythological creatures from Mapuche mythology from Chile. Sorcerers called kalkus would perform rituals to transform into Chonchons. These creatures are shaped like a human head with large ears that they use in a manner of wings to fly. They can only be seen by other kalkus or by magicians who want this power.

Description

Bitterflies are mutated insects that resemble human heads boasting two prolonged ears which they use as wings for flying, giving them the appearance of some sort of big and grotesque butterflies.

They have no attacks and move about the area slowly, obstructing the paths of the level. They will stay invisible unless the player runs into them, damages them, or when the player is not moving if they are nearby. When attacked, they may disappear and reappear elsewhere, safe from harm. Touching them inflicts Curse. When killed, its skull will fall on the floor, producing a peculiar sound.
