- "Sometimes blood is the only way."
- — Abbot Emmanuel to Maria
Blood is the Only Way is the seventh episode of the first season, and the 7th episode overall, of Netflix's original series, Castlevania: Nocturne.
Synopsis[]
- Emboldened by her victories, the Vampire Messiah steps into the spotlight. Richter flexes new abilities. Olrox makes a surprising proposal.
Plot[]
Erzsebet and her followers celebrate as she elaborates on her plans to conquer Europe and —with Olrox's begrudging assistance— the Americas. Drolta traps Emmanuel by revealing his relationship to Maria to Erzsebet to force him to prove his loyalty. Richter returns and apologizes to Annette, vowing to help her rescue Edouard. They plan an attack on the abbey, but are interrupted when Olrox appears, bringing with him Emmanuel's infernal tome which he uses to create night creatures in his machine. He asks them to destroy the machine, as only humans may do so, in order to stop Erzsebet's plans, though Richter is distrustful of him. Maria sneaks into the abbey to warn Emmanuel to flee beforehand. He instead has her captured to be sacrificed to Erzsebet to prove himself. Tera studies the tome and realizes that the machine cannot be destroyed, but can be sent back to Hell. Mizrak, disgusted by Emmanuel's actions, informs the group that Maria's life is in danger. They race to the abbey as Erzsebet uses her powers to cause a solar eclipse, plunging the country into darkness.

Quotes[]
- –Drolta Tzuentes: "Behold, the one before whom evil trembles, Devourer of Light, Taker of Souls, Vampire Lioness, She Who Mauls, The Messiah of-"
- –Olrox: (Unamused) "Yes, charmed to meet you."
- –Drolta Tzuentes: (Glares at Olrox) "You're meant to bow."
- –Olrox: "Countess?"
- –Drolta Tzuentes: "Her Magnificence has heard much about you."
- –Olrox: "I'm flattered. For a god to have heard of me."
- –Erzsebet Báthory: "A god should know where all her dragons are. Your to Europe has not been in vain. I've been told about the nauseating little revolution in the New World. Watch how we will get them to eat their own vomit here in France. Then you will see how to deal with you American upstarts. (Drinking Thyme's blood and hissing contentedly) The time for compromise is over. We will not only extinguish their dissent..."
- –Olrox: "But start an empire."
- –Erzsebet Báthory: "Exactly. And once they see my beauty, all will worship me."
- –Olrox: "Forgive me, but you want to accomplish this through an alliance with a man who will never worship you?"
- –Erzsebet Báthory: (Demonstrating her power) "I'm a goddess." (Drolta and her follower bow)
- –Olrox: "Of course."
- –Drolta Tzuentes: "Bow, I said."
- –Erzsebet Báthory: "I will make the Abbot worship me."
- –Drolta Tzuentes: "Everyone has a weakness. Priests. Dragons."
- –Erzsebet Báthory: "Yes." (Drinking Thyme's blood again)
- –Drolta Tzuentes: "Once she conquers Europe, you will be her guide into America."
- –Erzsebet Báthory: "And you will deliver it to me. Your Messiah."
- –Drolta Tzuentes: "I told you to bow."
- – (Olrox bow while glaring down at the smug Messiah)
- –Olrox: "Don't make me have to fight you"
- –Richter Belmont: "Why won't you face me?"
- –Olrox: "Just make sure you destroy the machine"
- –Richter Belmont: "You do it!"
- –Olrox: "Right now, I can't be seen to be doing anything. Beside, there's a need for a human hand in the business of forgemastery. This is why Erzsebet needs the Abbot."
- –Richter Belmont: "And why you need us?! You expect me to trust my mother's killer"
- –Olrox: "I could have killed you three times now. Ironic, I think, for both of us, that now I need a Belmont. If you want to defeat Erzsebet, you've no choice but to trust me."
- –Richter Belmont: (Grimly) "There is always a choice."
- –Olrox: "Just read the *** book."
- –Maria Renard: "Father. I'm here to warn you. There's going to be an attack. You need to get out of here. I don't want you to die."
- –The Abbot: "I am safe in the House of God."
- –Maria Renard: "House of God? This place is just a heap of bricks and stone."
- –The Abbot: "The Church is more than that, child. Without it, society loses it soul, its meaning. It is the structure through which morality itself is upheld."
- –Maria Renard: "The Church only upholds itself. A power hungry den of thieves spreading intolerance and hypocrisy. Happy to live on the backs of the poor in their extravagant buildings, rather than take on injustice."
- –The Abbot: "But without God, there's no justice of any kind."
- –Maria Renard: "No matter how complicated you make it, evil is still evil. Everything you're doing is built on the blood of innocent people."
- –The Abbot: "Sometimes blood is the only way."
- –Maria Renard: "If you cared about me, you should leave with me now. And maybe... maybe you can be my father. I'm not going without you, old man."
- –The Abbot: "Sweet, sweet Maria. God has truly sent you. Your sacrifice here will send your soul to heaven. (Tear shed from his eyes) Seize her."
- – (Maria screams as the night creatures restrain her as Mizrak watched in horror)
