- "Speakers don't help. Speakers are tainted. You attract evil, and you and yours were told to be out of Gresit by sunset."
- — Burly in "Necropolis"
Burly (バーリー Bārī?) is a minor antagonist in the Netflix original series, Castlevania. He was a member of Gresit's Church and a direct subordinate of its corrupt Bishop. He belonged to a group of equally corrupted priests who acted as the Bishop's personal thugs and who were often put in charge of doing all the dirty work.
He was voiced by Timothy Omundson in the English version of the show.
History[]
Burly is first seen along with another priest forcefully escorting an old man through the lonely alleys of Gresit. Trevor Belmont, who happens to be walking nearby, stops to listen what it's all about. Burly reprimands the man about how his kind staying in the city is what's causing the recent attacks by the night horde. He then proceeds to take out a stave in the shape of a cross and threatens to beat him with it. However, when Burly is about to land the first strike, Trevor quickly makes use of his whip and lashes at his hand to disarm him, although the attack ends up severing his index finger as well. After dealing with the other priest, both leave and the old man thanks Trevor, revealing that he is the Elder of the Codrii Speakers, a traveling tribe which are temporarily staying in Gresit to aid with the recent creature attacks.
Later that day, Burly, now accompanied by several other priests, ambushes Trevor outside the hut where the Speakers are hiding in and they take him to see the Bishop at the cathedral. The Bishop forcefully makes a deal with Trevor where he's left with no other option than to leave the city while the Speakers are sacrificed to supposedly remove the cause of the night horde attacks. Nevertheless, Trevor decides to stay and sends the Speakers to take refuge in the catacombs.
That afternoon, Burly can be seen forming part of a committee of priests who have gathered an angry mob and are leading them to apprehend the Speakers. After an initial confrontation with the priests and about to get lynched by the mob, Sypha Belnades suddenly appears and saves Trevor with her powerful magic. As Trevor is leaving, he notices Burly among the crowd and challenges him to a duel. Before they commence, however, both men state their reasons and Trevor's words end up convincing the people that it was the Church and its corrupt ways which brought the attacks upon them; and before both men start fighting, several citizens unexpectedly charge at Burly and kill him.
Personality[]
Burly is a bulky and muscular man with a seemingly permanent bad attitude, making honor to his name. He is mean-spirited and delights in ordering people about, as well as inflicting pain on those he deems opposition. Because he believes what he wants, he is pretty ignorant and not very smart when it comes to the truth. He is shown to be pretty vengeful after Trevor removes his right index finger. His attempts to sway the townspeople are a clear sign of cowardice.
