The Camilla Cemetery (カミーラ墓地 Kamīra Bochi?) is a location in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. It is the first cemetery area encountered in the game.
Overview[]
Camilla Cemetery is the easternmost accessible area when starting out from the town of Jova. It is located just to the east of the town of Aljiba. If the player places Garlic at the base of the cemetery, a Gypsy will appear to give them a Silver Knife, which is more powerful than a regular Dagger but consumes Hearts. The west section is filled with Zombie Hands, and a gap and high ledge if heading to the east apparently prevents the player from reaching the other part of the cemetery.
The namesake for this cemetery, Camilla (called Vampira in this game), is nearby, just across the Joma Marsh in Laruba Mansion, but is out of reach if a jump across the gap and ledge cannot be made. Making it to the other side, or progressing further into the game if nearby areas have not all been explored, requires backtracking all the way back to the starting point of the game at Jova and then continuing through the Belasco Marsh. With the right power-ups and Laurels needed to cross marshes purchased in the vicinity, Belasco Marsh should be easier to traverse this time. Eventually, the Joma Marsh will be encountered, which will allow travel to Laruba Mansion, where Vampira can be defeated. Continuing past the mansion in the marsh will lead back to Camilla Cemetery. This side segment is populated by Slimes. It is easy enough to cross the cliff and gap from this side if so desired. However, going back to the other side again will require taking the long way around again without making the jump.
It turns out, though, that it is possible to make it across the jump after all using a jump trick. If the player jumps from the far edge and then whips in midair with the right timing, Simon Belmont will be raised slightly and be able to cross the gap. If this is attempted at the beginning of the game, the next section will be very difficult, but taking this path early on may make it possible to save some time off the game, which will help obtain a good ending. A Chain Whip does little damage to the Slimes on the right side of the cemetery. Further right will take the player to the other side of Joma Marsh (which will consume at least two Laurels), where they'll encounter a Skeleton which takes four hits from the Chain Whip.

Other appearances[]
As the first cemetery to appear in a Castlevania game, Camilla Cemetery is the archetype of later cemeteries found in the series. It may have actually been depicted in sequels, or has at least inspired them.
Castlevania: Dracula's Curse[]
Warakiya Village may have been partly based on Aljiba from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. A cemetery appears on the far end of the stage, which may be a reference to Camilla Cemetery's position to the right of the town of Aljiba. This stage does not feature similar grabbing Zombie Hands, but instead free-roaming Zombies. It features a short ledge that must be jumped over which might represent the impassable ledge that exists in Camilla's Cemetery that prevents travel from that direction.
Super Castlevania IV[]
- Main article: Super Castlevania IV Stage 2
The path taken in Super Castlevania IV to Dracula's Castle generally aligns with the optimal path that can be taken in Simon's Quest to the castle. Camilla Cemetery corresponds with the graveyard and forest seen in Stage 2. This section is strikingly similar to Camilla Cemetery. Zombie hands thrust from the ground similar to Camilla Cemetery. It is also located in a similar position as the cemetery found in Dracula's Curse. The high ledge in Camilla Cemetery may also be represented in the area, as it takes some tricky maneuvering down and then up to go onto the area past this.
References[]
- ↑ A traveling Gypsy will appear if placing a clove of Garlic on the western area of the cemetery. She will give a Silver Knife to the player when spoken to.
- ↑ In most scenarios, the main path eastward on the world map is intended to reach an end at the Camilla Cemetery. A high ledge over a water pit located midway through the cemetery will prevent the player from proceeding any further. This ledge can actually be reached by jumping and whipping with precise positioning and timing, although the player is not intended to go beyond this point on their first visit to this location.
- ↑ In most scenarios, once the player has returned to the Camilla Cemetery after traveling the main intended path on the world map (likely right after completing Laruba Mansion), they are expected to backtrack all the way toward the east, past the woods section of the Wicked Ditch, and visit the town of Fetra, and then continue traveling eastward to proceed further into the game.
