The Captain is an enemy in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. It is a large portrait painting possessed by the spirit of the captain of the ship.

Description[]

The Captain inhabits the central quarters of the Ghost Ship and the exit door to his room is blocked by a network of vines. When the player enters the room, the painting will suddenly come to life and begin to violently spin and bash around in a counterclockwise oval direction around the room, although it will never reach the doorways. When struck, it will briefly flash while rapidly spinning its frame, and be knocked back in the opposite direction before it returns to the same spot, resuming its flying pattern after a moment; the portrait is invincible during this time, preventing consecutive hits. It is possible to crouch underneath the painting to avoid its flying path on the ground.

If the painting manages to make contact with the player, a painted portrait of either Richter Belmont or Maria Renard (depending on the current character being played as) will appear on a blank white canvas; the now freed spirit of the Captain will then point his sword toward it directly from above and behind the image, and slice the hero's portrait into multiple pieces, killing them instantly as he laughs at their demise.

The Captain is able to imprison a character even while they are performing an Item Crash. However, some Item Crashes can still defeat the portrait even after the player dies; in these cases, the game will not reload until after the Captain's death animation concludes. In Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, if he makes contact with Maria's Turtle shell, the shell will reposition directly under him and then he immediately dies. It is unclear if this is a glitch or not.

In Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, he no longer wields a sword in his right hand and now he holds the captured hero's portrait with both hands. Also, the portraits of either captured hero now appear with a golden frame around them, more closely resembling the one the Captain is in. Another change is his flying path, which is now slightly repositioned higher above the floor, causing him to partially pass through the ceiling. Because of this, he can no longer make ground contact with Maria's Turtle shell. Maria can still summon the shell in midair, however, and if the Captain makes contact with it, he'll get damaged as normal, unlike in the original game.

Upon being vanquished, after uttering an otherworldly wail, the portrait will have its frame shatter, followed by the canvas burning apart and the vines blocking the exit being removed as well.

Trivia[]

  • The background music that plays on Stage 5 is called "Picture of a Ghost Ship"; this probably is in reference to the Captain, as he is inside a picture and is only encountered on this level.
  • In Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Brauner uses a very similar attack during his boss fight where he enters a painting canvas that floats and swoops around the room attempting to bump on the player, much like the Captain from Rondo of Blood.
