In most Castlevania games (mainly recent ones, which feature a "metroidvania" structure), a Map item generally reveals a relatively large number of rooms within a playable stage (usually the castle) which have not yet been accessed. These areas are generally signified by being colored gray on the in-game map to differentiate them from those already uncovered by the player, which are colored in blue (or red in the case of Save Rooms, or yellow in the case of Warp Rooms).

Obtaining a map usually reveals an overall schematic of a stage (usually the one it was found at), showing its main rooms and hallways, and sometimes hinting where paths to adjacent stages are located or even entrances to secret areas. As such, a map won't necessarily reveal all the hidden rooms and areas of the stage it belongs to.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]

In Symphony of the Night, the map item purchasable from the Master Librarian only contains the basic rooms for just the normal version of the castle. Interestingly, the original price of $103 for the PSX version was increased to $105 in The Dracula X Chronicles PSP/PS4 version. This change references the increase of the Japanese consumption tax (1997=3%, 2007=5%).

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow[]

In Aria of Sorrow, there are three Castle Maps. The first one can be either found in the Castle Corridor or bought from Hammer's shop, the second one can only be bought from Hammer's shop, and the third one can be found in the Floating Garden. Obtaining any of these maps will uncover a part of the castle's in-game map, with the areas uncovered by the map but not yet visited shown in gray (to distinguish them from the areas where the player has already been, which are shown in blue).
