Block 5 is the fifth stage in Castlevania. It includes the Prison Room, Laboratory, and Picture Frame Room.

Overview[]

Stage 13 (Prison Room)[]

Hunchbacks and bone throwing Skeletons immediately swarm Simon Belmont upon entering this dungeon area, but upon ascending to the upper floor, Red Skeletons (which are unique to this block) will appear as well. While the white Skeletons are fast but weak, the Red Skeletons are slower and reanimate after being knocked down.

Notes
  • Holy Water is in one of the first candles.
  • Just before interacting with the Red Skeletons, Simon can smack a block in the ceiling for a Double Shot.
  • If Simons keeps running up against this same ceiling's wall before climbing down, he will reveal a secret 1-UP below the stairs (this is the only 1-UP found in the game, at least for the first quest).
  • After the Red Skeletons, break an upper platform's leftmost block for the first Pork Chop.

Stage 14 (Laboratory)[]

Heading into the laboratory, the Axe-Men make their entrance (and are also unique to this block). Inside the laboratory in the background there can be seen three standing caskets, several crude looking electrical devices, various beakers and bottle, and 2 large slabs with what appear to be three pale cadavers each. Here, Red Skeletons and Axe-Men walk around, and there are a lot of opportunities for Money Bags.

Notes
  • The Axe-Men are tough, but they have some weaknesses. It doesn't matter if they throw their axe high or low; Simon can hit both with his whip while standing. Holy Water can one-shot them if thrown at their feet, and the Axe can be lobbed over the enemy's shield to bonk them on the head and do massive damage, killing them in 1 or 2 hits.
  • There is an Axe right next to the second Axe-Man in the first screen.
  • A Double Shot is hidden inside an upper wall. Simon can climb up there with stairs from below.
  • Before heading left after climbing down in the second room, stand in place among the beakers and flasks to reveal a secret 1000 Money bag.
  • Jump onto one of the higher platforms from the upper left side, then crouch to reveal a secret 1000 Money Bag.
  • Stand still on the left wall of grating (underneath the stairs that take you back up) to reveal a secret 1000 Money Bag.

Stage 15 (Picture Gallery)[]

The first area has more Red Skeletons, now combined with Dragon Skull Cannons. The final room is known as "Death's Hall," and two Axe-Men have to be fought while Medusa Heads come swooping in, making for one of the toughest challenges in the game.

Notes
  • The leftmost candle on the starting floor has a Cross.
  • Before climbing up into Death's Hall, there is a second Pork Chop in the wall past the stairs.
  • The Axe-Men and Medusa Head combo is tough, but it's important to take both enemy weaknesses into account. The latter can't hurt Simon if he is centered onscreen, and once an Axe-Men is taken down, the Medusa Heads can be ignored as Simon pushes on.

Boss[]

Death is the hardest boss in the game. He floats around up and down across the room, first coming in from the right side. Every time he lands, he will summon 3-4 sickles out of thin air to slowly home in on the player, and these sickles are usually spawned in the same positions relative to Simon's position. Even when Death is defeated, his sickles will still hunt Simon until he grabs the red orb. Holy Water can be used at the start to stun him before he can even begin throwing sickles (it must be thrown onto the right platform so Death lands on the flame. The Axe is a great choice for covering the sickles above Simon's head. The Cross can also cover a big range, but Simon has to jump and that may risk hitting the sickles above his head.

Trivia[]

  • It is possible that the Main Hall acts as the Castle Keep for Dracula's Castle in this game, but this is not clear.
