The Crystal Castle is a location in Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge. It is the castle in the upper-left corner of the stage select screen and features ancient Greek ruin backgrounds. Just like in Plant Castle, the player heads from right to left in this stage.
Overview[]
Just as its name states, it is a castle built in a Gothic style that is entirely made of crystal and which sits in the middle of a lake. The building is erected among what appears to be the ruins of an ancient Greek-like civilization. The main characteristic of this level is the presence of numerous waterways and other bodies of water. Several waterways must be traversed throughout the level which periodically change the direction of their current, telegraphed by the glowing of the eyes of the gargoyles from whose mouths the water comes in and out.
There is also a prominence of crystal-made moving platforms and floating blocks, which are indeed put to good use. Floating blocks will begin to shatter when stepped onto and break apart shortly after, and moving platforms are usually placed above large bodies of water, so care must be taken while jumping on them, lest the hero falls into a watery grave or an endless chasm.
As expected from a flooded place like this, Water Creeps (Mermen) will often jump out from the water and attack Christopher. Other hazards include large walls covered with spikes that will constantly move in and retract, so the player must time their movements well and move quickly past them.
There also are a few rooms where the player will be given various paths to choose from. Choosing the wrong one will take them back to a previous area, making them lose precious time.
The entrance to the secret room is found in the first room with Big Eyes, by climbing the leftmost rope up to its top and past the ceiling.
The boss of this castle is the sorcerer known as Dark Side. He uses his magic staff to call forth a lightning bolt to strike down from the clouds above. However, every time after he casts this spell, he'll briefly turn into a floating diamond-like crystal, which is the only time when he becomes vulnerable.

The Crystal Castle may represent a revived Sunken City, first seen in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, and recurring in several games since.
