The Daybreak, also known as the Sword of Dawn, is a special two-handed Great Sword that can summon the skeletal "Dawn Warriors" to fight for the player.
Origins[]
The name "Sword of Dawn" is most likely a reference to Michael Moorcock's Hawkmoon series, part of the Eternal Champion series. The protagonist, Dorian Hawkmoon, acquires a mystic weapon called "The Sword of the Dawn", described as a red-bladed broadsword. The Sword of the Dawn can call forth "The Legion of the Dawn", a seemingly inexhaustible host of somewhat ghostly Aztec warriors called from some other dimension to protect the sword's wielder.
Game specific information[]
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]
The Sword of Dawn can be found in the Reverse Keep, behind a breakable wall. It's one of the few missable items in the game. If Alucard breaks the wall where it's hidden and then leaves the room without picking it up, the sword will disappear and can't be acquired again in that playthrough. It lacks the Step Attack ability of most Great Swords, but its special attack can make up for this. Pressing a quarter-circle forward, then [Attack], summons a random warrior or set of warriors, which attacks for a while and then disappears.
Dawn Warriors[]
- Archer of Dawn
A standing or crouching Skeleton archer wearing Armor. He will fire three arrows straight ahead before vanishing.
- Mage of Dawn
A young woman wearing robes who, unlike most Dawn summons, is not skeletal. She will summon one charged Hellfire ball, firing it straight ahead, before vanishing. Note that the ball goes rather high and will not work against most enemies and some bosses.
- Warrior of Dawn
A skeleton knight wielding a spear. They will walk straight ahead and damage anything they come into contact with until it's dead, or they expire. They can kill most non-boss enemies, but will only kill one apiece before vanishing. They also vanish if they destroy a candle or torch. If they hit a secret wall they will break through and walk off-screen.
- Hooded Archer of Dawn
A cross-legged skeleton mage. He will summon four arrows. They will appear, two at a time, above his head. They will then rotate towards the target and fly at it.
Of note is that they seem to be color-coded on their power, or 'ranked'. Red is the most powerful, with faded green being the weakest.
