The Ripper is an enemy in the Castlevania series. He is a fiend who takes great pleasure in slaughtering people with knives.

Description[]

Murderous hunchbacks usually armed with throwing knives and who possess strong jumping abilities. The first Ripper to appear in a Castlevania game may have been the boss Nasty Grant from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. This creature wanders around the screen, crawls on the walls and ceilings, and throws knives.

Appearances[]

Kid Dracula (GB)[]

Rippers were properly introduced in Kid Dracula for the Game Boy handheld system. In this game, they wait on tree branches and occasionally jump up, throwing a dagger diagonally downward.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow[]

The Ripper is basically a Flea Man who also throws daggers. Much like said enemies in other games, they are carried and deployed in the field by other flying enemies (Altairs) in one room of the Floating Garden.

A trap treasure chest found in one of the final rooms of the Forbidden Area contains a group of Rippers that will burst out and attack when destroyed. Due to them initially being all gathered together and only requiring one or two swings from most weapons to kill them all, they make for a good EXP source that will allow the player to quickly grow up a few levels.

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence[]

Known as Death Reaper in this game, this enemy is a stronger variant of the Flea Man. They only appear in the final stage of the game, the Pagoda of the Misty Moon, replacing the standard Flea Men throughout this area. Like the Flea Man, the Death Reaper comes armed with two hand axes –one in each hand– and attacks in groups, madly hoping all around the player and then leaping and landing by swinging it axes downward many times in a row. It is more aggressive than Flea Man and attacks more frequently.

Interestingly, the Death Reaper is more reptilian-like, having a lizard-like head and what appear to be two long and scaled horns coming out from above its eyes and similar spines on its back, resembling classic depictions of the Gremlin. This similarity could possibly be related to how the Hunchback –from which the Flea Man is derived– has been depicted in certain previous games, like Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Super Castlevania IV, although this is unconfirmed.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness[]

The Death Ripper is an alternate version of the Flea Man, although it doesn't throw knives. Its back is torn open, exposing its broken spine (similarly to that of the Minotaurus). It madly hops around, which makes it hard to target, and always attacks in numerous groups. It also has a nasty attack where it places the two blades he carries on the ground and holds on to them, and then slides on them a long distance at great speed. Quick area-of-effect attacks, like the Aura Blast ability of a Battle-Type Innocent Devil, can instantly deal with large groups of these enemies.
