The Demon Guest House is a location of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. As its name implies, it is an elegant area of the castle featuring various guest rooms which are attended by butlers and maids.

Overview[]

One of the largest areas in the castle. It contains many vertical halls and passageways, and brightly wallpapered rooms. There are seven guest rooms that have either items, enemies, or both. This area contains two distinct themes: the western half of the guest house is themed to toys and clowns, while the eastern half is themed to ballroom dancing.

There are two areas of special interest in this location: the walking piano room and the sliding puzzle room.

The walking piano room features a giant and elaborated piano keyboard. The player must step on its keys as they move along it, and these will produce the appropriate notes according to their placement. However, this room is for atmosphere only and has no other purpose whatsoever.

Sliding puzzle room[]

The sliding puzzle room is inspired by the classic sliding puzzle game; however, instead of just moving pieces to match a pattern, the player must arrange them in order to form a path to reach the exit. Like most versions of the game, the "board" is arranged in a 4×4 grid, for a total of 16 rooms. Upon entering the puzzle area (at the bottom-right corner of the grid), the player will be in a special room where they can move the pieces of a puzzle on the wall (either with the controller or via the Nintendo DS touchscreen), as well as reset the pieces to their original position. There's also a big button on the ground that the player can step upon to activate and deactivate usage of the wall puzzle.

Each numbered piece represents a room in the next area, and each has a determined design which shows the openings in the room it represents. On the other hand, the "empty space" can be used like a free room with up to four exits. The object of the game is to arrange the pieces in order to construct a path that lets the player reach the next section of the guest house and be able to progress further into the game. It's also possible to open a shortcut to The Lost Village. Additionally, many of the rooms within the grid (especially the dead-end rooms 5, 8, 9 and 12) contain unique and powerful weapons and items, and chances are many of these rooms would never be visited if the player just arranged the pieces to reach the main exit. For a quick solution, arranging all the rooms in the standard numeric order will connect all corner exits, but the dead-end rooms will be blocked.

The following is a list of all items that can be found scattered among the rooms that comprise the sliding puzzle:

* The Ring Mail and the mirror aren't in Room 4 itself, which would be the one that corresponds to that position, but any piece that provides an entrance to it and an exit to the right can be placed there to allow access to the exit at the top-right corner of the puzzle grid. The next room contains the Ring Mail and a large mirror that Soma can enter once he has gained dominance of Paranoia's soul, Phase Shifter; inside of which is Dracula's Tunic.

Notes[]

  • Each room within the 4×4 grid that comprises the sliding puzzle is worth its own percentage toward the overall map completion rate. In order to achieve a 100% completion rate, the player will need to make sure to visit all the numbered rooms (1 to 15) by repeatedly returning to shuffle the pieces of the puzzle to build new paths until all rooms have been uncovered.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair[]

The Demon Guest House takes up much of the middle levels of the second chapter of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Lord of Unseen Strings. It also extends to the lower left corner of the map. The Puppet Master is first encountered here, but he can later move almost anywhere on the map.

Trivia[]

  • An unused conversation between Soma Cruz and Yoko Belnades suggests the giant piano in this place could have been planned to be used as part of a puzzle to obtain hidden items.[1] This idea would be used later in Chapter 2 of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.
  • The room with the giant piano keyboard is probably a reference to the 1988 film, Big, starring Tom Hanks, in which there is a famous scene where the protagonist dances on a walking piano in a toy store.
