Elizabeth Bartley is a vampire from Konami's Castlevania series. She appears as a non-playable character in Castlevania: Bloodlines, which was published on the Sega Genesis in 1994.

In the early 1600s, Bartley was executed for vampirism, but was revived nearly 300 years later by a witch named Drolta Tzuentes. To revive her uncle, Count Dracula, Bartley had the Crown Prince of Austria assassinated, and thus led Europe into the chaos of World War I. In 1917, the events in Bloodlines, she attempted to stop heroes John Morris and Eric Lecarde from thwarting the resurrection of the Count. Her plan, however, ultimately failed, as she, and later Dracula himself, were slain by the two Vampire Hunters.

Trivia

  • Bartley's Japanese name is an antiquated way to render Erzsébet Báthory's name, and was probably intended as a direct reference to the historic figure.
  • A possible first reference to Elizabeth Bartley or her family is the name of Bodley Mansion in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest; "Bodley" might be a mistranslation of Báthory.
  • In Castlevania: The Belmont Legacy comics, the Bartley family is portrayed as the leaders of a dark cult who have resurrected Dracula on more than one occasion. It is unclear what Elizabeth's connection to this family is, if any.
  • Countess Báthory is associated with vampire legends, having been accused of killing servant girls and bathing in their blood to keep herself forever young.
  • In Judgment, the bathing in blood element of her back story is given to the game's version of Camilla. They are likely separate characters though. Eric's ending mentions "Dracula's niece" (Elizabeth Bartley), not Carmilla (who has no known blood ties to Dracula). Both Carmilla Cemetery and Bodley Mansion appear in Simon's Quest, and seem to be referring to different people.
  • The lead female antagonist in the canceled game Castlevania: Resurrection is named The Countess, and may in fact be Countess Elizabeth Bartley. She is portrayed as Dracula's lover in this game, however, so this link is uncertain.
  • In the fight against her, she transforms into Medusa, and is referred to as Medusa in the credits of the American localization. (It is more probable that she summoned Medusa, as the player fights Bartley herself later on.)
