According to the Bloodlines Electronic Gaming Monthly fax, Excalibur was the name of the whip used by the Belmont Clan. It was one of three confirmed magic whips known since the 15th century, along with the Vampire Killer (owned by the Morris Clan) and Death Mercury (which disappeared). The Excalibur is capable of the attacking with fireballs when its user concentrates. It was used by the Belmonts particularly frequently during the 18th century.
The EGM fax contradicts current canon on this matter, though, which instead portrays the Vampire Killer as the main whip used by the Belmont Clan, with the Morris Clan only borrowing and safeguarding it until it could be reclaimed by the Belmonts. There is no mention of a whip named Excalibur in any publicly released material, though the sword Excalibur has appeared.
Trivia[]
- The ability to produce fireballs identifies this as Christopher Belmont's whip. It is less clear if this was used by other members of the Belmont Clan who appeared in games released by Castlevania: Bloodlines.
- The developers of Bloodlines may have seen Christopher's fireball whip as a distinct whip from the one used by Trevor, Simon and Richter Belmont, perhaps placing Christopher in a separate branch of Belmonts as a result.
- In this scenario, the other whip used by the Belmont Clan may have been the Death Mercury, as the Vampire Killer was primarily used by the Morris Family, and that was the only other known magic whip.
- In this scenario, the Excalibur whip may have been passed down to descendants of Christopher's son, Soleil Belmont, who is shown to have a descendant contemporary to the events of the Dracula novel.
- The EGM fax only mentions the Belmont Clan using the Excalibur. This may mean that Trevor, Simon and Richter all used the Excalibur, despite not being seen producing its characteristic fireballs.
- In this scenario, Simon, on a different line on the family tree as Christopher, may have received the Excalibur due to it rejecting Christopher's son, Soleil, due to his inability to resist Dracula's influence. The Death Mercury may have actually been the whip Soleil used, which would allow him to use it despite Dracula's presence.
- The EGM fax mentions that the Excalibur whip was frequently used by the Belmonts in the 18th century. It is known that, at the time, the developers of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood intended for that game to be the first of a series of "Dracula X" titles. The family tree lists several unnamed relatives of Richter, including his parent, two siblings, wife, and two children. The Excalibur may have been used by any of these relatives in planned Dracula X titles that were never made. These frequent battles would exhaust and weaken the Belmonts, so that they did not participate in major battles during much of the 19th and 20th centuries.
