Scutum is a type of Glyph that is featured in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. It provides Shanoa with a shield that forms around her to protect her from attacks (mainly projectiles; in contrast to most of the other glyphs she has at her disposal, which are mainly offensive in nature). Larger shields and positioned to protect different areas of Shanoa's body are granted depending on the tier of the glyph.
Characteristics[]
While a Scutum glyph is in effect, Shanoa's CON and MND attributes will increase by a large amount, the exact numbers depending not only on the stats in question, but also on what tier of glyph is in effect, with higher tiers granting a higher increase. Also, there are certain projectiles that will be rendered useless if they hit a Scutum glyph, yet cannot be destroyed by weapon glyphs. In certain situations, players may find themselves using a Scutum glyph to provide themselves a larger window of opportunity for offensive tactics.
The Scutum Glyph Union temporarily encases Shanoa in an all-powerful shield, rendering her completely invincible until it wears off. It comes at great cost, however, as both arms must have a Scutum glyph equipped. Due to this, the only ways for Shanoa to damage enemies is through sliding and dive-kicks, both of which are rather weak in strength in comparison to normal weapon glyphs. An exception to this is to equip the Shield Helm after obtaining it from the Boss Rush Mode.

- Scutum is Latin for "shield".
- A scutum is a large, rectangular-curved shield that was previously used by the Italic people before it became a commodity for soldiers in the Roman Empire. This switch occurred when they abandoned the hoplite phalanx formation in favor of the formation with maniples, since the latter was perceived to be more effective than a traditional round shield.
