Garlic - Simon's Quest - 01

Garlic is a limited-use item found in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. While it is said to have mystical properties, its most notable use is to summon certain gypsies in certain parts of the cemeteries strewn about the land, enabling Simon to be presented with special and powerful items.

Garlic can also be used as a weapon/trap of sorts against enemies; any monster that comes in contact with it will be dealt quick, low-level damage until it is destroyed, even bosses.

Availability[]

Garlic can be purchased from gypsies in various towns at a cost of 50 Hearts for 2 cloves.

Trivia[]

  • Garlic was originally planned to appear in the first Castlevania, as seen in early game design documents available in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection. It would keep enemies away for a limited time.
  • Garlic's appearance and usability against monsters in Simon's Quest can be attributed to old lore of it being a deterrent against vampires.

A Garlic sub-weapon was planned to appear in Castlevania (N64), but was scrapped on the final release of the game, along with many other planned assets, due to rushed development to meet release deadlines. An image of it and other planned sub-weapons appeared on game magazine previews of the era.[1]
