The Osafune is a katana in the Castlevania series. It is a Japanese sword with the full name of Bizen Osafune Nagamitsu.

Origins[]

Nagamitsu, the son of Mitsutada was one of the top swordsmith of the time, and he wanted others around to know that the Osafune school of which he belonged made some of the best quality swords.

He left behind so many great swords that nobody can tell you everything about his remarkable work. The Tokyo Art museum owns one of his swords presented to them by Hirobumi Itou, an avid collector. Nagamitsu's work shows various designs on his blades such as an oochouji (large clove) pattern and kochouji midare (small clove disorder) pattern.

Games specific information[]

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]

The Osafune Katana is a versatile weapon with two special attacks: Slash Flurry and Warp Strike. Although it requires a command input, its Slash Flurry special attack (100 ATT) is stronger than the Masamune (90 ATT). Its Warp Strike costs no MP, hits twice per attack and has a Slash Flurry effect. Although initially weaker than the Masamune's Warp Strike, once Alucard's STR reaches 130 points, this sword's warping move won't receive an ATT penalty, while Masamune's equivalent move, albeit stronger, will always receive the penalty since it's not legitimately possible to have over 200 STR. So, with enough strength (from 141 STR onward), this sword's Warp Strike will be stronger than the Masamune's equivalent. It also has a much lower DEF penalty.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow[]

Like all the Katana in this game, Soma pulls it extremely fast, but it takes a while before he can strike again. This cooldown is eliminated with the special attack, however. Additionally, if Soma strikes just before he lands after a jump, he can strike immediately again, almost getting two strikes in the time of one. It strikes in a straight line forward and slightly upward.

It can be evolved from a Masamune with the help of a Barbariccia soul. If you use a Malachi Soul, you can evolve the Osafune into a Kunitsuna for further power.
