Frogs and Toads have appeared in several Castlevania games.

The first time a frog-like enemy made an appearance in Dracula's Castle was the Tadpole boss in the Konami mascot game Konami Wai Wai World, which featured levels of several different Konami franchises. This enemy appeared as a giant frog with one eye, hopped about the place and attacked with its massive tongue. This was the only boss in the Castlevania stage that the player had to defeat (the player could even skip past Dracula). It guarded the key needed to rescue Simon Belmont. This was also the only time where a frog-like enemy was a boss.

An endless supply of Frogs (described as "Mad Frogs") sprung from the swamp areas of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and hopped about. They reappeared in the swamps of Super Castlevania IV and Chronicles. They later appeared in Rondo of Blood and had the ability to strike with their tongues.

In addition to Frogs, Symphony of the Night also had Toads, which were larger enemies that also attacked with their tongues. After a relatively long absence, Frogs and Toads made a return in Portrait of Ruin, where Charlotte Aulin gained the ability to turn herself or Jonathan into a frog, gaining access to hard to reach areas.

The only appearance that frogs have made in a 3D Castlevania game is as a critter in the background of the Dead Bog in Lords of Shadow.

Trivia

  • These enemies appear to be inspired by the horror film Frogs (1972), where an upper-class U.S. Southern family is victimized by several different animal species, including reptiles, amphibians and birds.
  • The fact that Frogs and Toads in Symphony of the Night drop Pizza and Fist-type weapons may be a reference to a certain group of subterranean terrapins, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or possibly some amphibian friends of theirs, the Punk Frogs. A pair of Tonfa ("Nunchaku") located in the same area seems to reinforce this theory.
    • These items could also be a reference to another group of brawling amphibians, the Battletoads.
