Frozen Shade

Not to be confused with Frozen Half or Frost Elemental.

The Frozen Shade is an enemy in the Castlevania series. It is the wraith of an innocent maiden who froze to death. She attacks the living with ice to steal their body heat and warm her frozen heart.

It is a Shade that manipulates frigid air. They first appeared in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, where they were female spirits inhabiting the frozen areas of the Underground Caverns.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]

The Frozen Shade is depicted as a naked female spirit that inhabits the frozen areas of the Underground Caverns. The sections they are found in are icy in appearance, an effect of their cold nature, which also serves as a slight camouflage. They attack by either conjuring a freezing wind against Alucard, or by summoning three rotating ice blades to impale him upon them.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon[]

Unlike the rest of her incarnations, where they appear as naked female spirits, in Circle of the Moon, Frozen Shades fashion a complete dress with a long skirt. They float about and freeze the air in front of them, forming two chunks of ice which they then hurl at Nathan Graves, one after another. If they connect, Nathan will become momentarily frozen, unable to move and left at the mercy of any surrounding enemies, while his DEF also severely drops. Nothing can be done if this happens, though, other than waiting until the effect wears off. Needless to say, due to these traits, getting hit by the first iceball will almost assure being struck by the second one. In addition, if the Frozen Shade is killed while in the middle of forming an iceball, the projectile will still keep on forming and launch itself at Nathan. As such, if a Frozen Shade is already in the middle of her attack animation, it's always a good idea to start spinning the whip in order to destroy any incoming projectiles.

Frozen Shades look and act almost identical to Heat Shades, except for their color, element, and the behavior of their projectiles. They form the main opposing force in Camilla's lair, the Underground Waterway, where they can be encountered in large numbers, and they reappear in the middle section of the Observation Tower, where they are always found paired with Heat Shades.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow[]

In Dawn of Sorrow, the Frozen Shade appears as a blue naked woman floating in the air. She is found in the Subterranean Hell and attacks by conjuring freezing winds, or by launching giant ice blades at Soma Cruz.

The rotating ice blades which the Frozen Shade usually attacks with seem to be a variant of the Ice Needle spell, which first became available to Charlotte Aulin in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
- In fact, Ice Needle is the spell Charlotte can acquire from the Frozen Shade in Harmony of Despair.
The female Frost Elemental boss from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence resembles the Frozen Shade.
The internal files for the Frozen Shade found in both Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin refer to the enemy as "Oferia", a reference to the character Ophelia from Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
