Some ghosts are equipped with various kinds of swords and possibly a shield. These ghosts are related to spirits that possess suits of armor that wield swords. In some cases, armors that wield swords continue to fight as ghosts wielding swords when the armor has been destroyed. Another related and more advanced enemy is the Spectral Sword, which is a single possessed master sword that controls other weapons and shields through a poltergeist phenomena. They are also related to Sword Familiars, sentient swords that can follow the playable character around and slice through opponents.
The first such ghost was a ghost fencer in Kid Dracula. It consists of a ghosts face with a shield in front of it and a rapier. It makes lunging attacks with its sword occasionally. In artwork, it is shown to be a broadsword and a shield with no visible ghost. Dead nobles were shown to use rapiers in Super Castlevania IV (Dancing Spectres). A female rapier-wielding Ghost called Hunting Girl or Nemesis first appeared in Symphony of the Night.
A greatsword wielding Vandal Swords (later called Alastor) ghosts are also found in Symphony of the Night. These ghosts sometimes come out of the armor of Sword Lord (later called Victory Armor) once the armor has been destroyed. If you attack the sword, you see an outline of a large humanoid, in a flinching pose. In Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, the Alastor Soul allows you to control the Alastor as a Familiar, which is similar to the Sword Familiar found in Symphony of the Night. These swords are called Phantom Swords in Curse of Darkness. The Spectral Sword is a variant of a Phantom Sword in this game that can emit a beam of piercing light.
A giant version of a Vandal Sword called Azaghal (the executioner of hell) also appears in Symphony of the Night in the inverted castle in the same spot that the Spectral Sword did in the normal castle. It would be important to mention that the Soul Steal, Summon Spirit, and Tetra Spirit spells as well as blunt attacks will have little effect. Striking the handle is his weak point.
Regular ghosts in Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness also wield swords. Several varieties in Lament of Innocence also have shields and armor, including the Ghost Knight, Ghost Soldier, and Ghost Warrior, making them similar to the ghost fencer that appeared in the original Boku Dracula-kun.
