The Great Explosion is an event that took place circa 1547 at Dracula's castle. It is, as its name suggests, a huge explosion that destroyed the Brotherhood of Light's army after their failed attempt to take over the castle.
Background[]

The Great Explosion, from the Book of Dracul.
Tangible differences in the sediment found under this land prove that a great explosion of energy had its epicenter at this very spot. Originally, geologists thought that it was the result of the impact of an enormous meteorite. However, following the recent discovery of numerous human remains, the hypothesis defended by the Church has gained greater strength. It claims that the release of energy was the work of God Himself, and that it was he who channeled His power through Roland de Ronceval, His representative on Earth, to defeat the forces of evil. Even today, scientists and believers disagree on these theories. We pray that one day we might know the truth.
Plot[]
After being defeated by Dracula himself, Roland de Ronceval, a Paladin, takes his crucifix and starts praying. Dracula joins the prayer and grabs the cross to show that God and holy power has no effect on him because in the past he was God's chosen warrior. A first explosion blows off the soldiers nearby.
At the end of the prayer, finished by Dracula himself, the holy power explodes. The resulting nuclear-like explosion is seen from space and heard from thousands of miles away. Dracula is the only survivor of the explosion, maybe with the exception of Alucard, who appears afterward (possibly due to their shared immortality, rendering him immune to holy energy as well).
Incantation[]
Similar to most spells in the Lords of Shadow saga, the Great Explosion requires Latin script to take effect and requires a considerably longer casting time than any other magic seen, which is mostly attributed to its enormous power. The holy magic creates a minor –although still big– explosion around the caster before culminating in a massive explosion, so large that it can be seen from space, incinerating everything around the caster. The incantation for the spell as the game shows is the following:
Christus Vivit, Christus Regnat. Ubi, fuerint haec nomina, et digna Dei, |
Christ lives, Christ reigns. Worthy God, by these names, |
Casualties and consequences[]
- Roland de Ronceval
- Around 500,000 soldiers from the Brotherhood (according to a scroll)
- Various equipment
- Dracula's Castle is destroyed down to its foundations.
- It left a huge crater that is still visible 500 years later, when Castlevania City was built over the same foundations. Some ruins of the castle, such as the Map Rooms, have survived and can be found in underground sections and parts of the Bioquimek Corporation.
Trivia[]
- The incantation in full can be found in page 489 of Macmillan's Magazine, Vol. VII.
