A Great Sword is a massive sword that is made to smash through its targets. It is usually obtained from a Guardian-type enemy.
It is also a class of swords introduced in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow that refers to two-handed European swords that are swung overhead.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]
The Great Sword is the strongest Great Sword in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Its ATT is 23 points higher than the Obsidian Sword but lacks the thrusting ability of the other Great Swords.
About half of the two-handed weapons in Symphony of the Night can be considered Great Swords. These are generally swung in a slow fashion and in a little more of an arc than other swords. They are usually stronger and have a longer range than their one-handed counterparts but are slower and, as such, have a lower swing rate. All of them (except two) have the ability to Step Attack, usually by pressing back, then forward and [Attack].
