A Horizontal Knife Slash (informal name) is a swipe of the blade horizontally across attacking enemies attacking enemies directly in front of the player with a knife. It is identical to the Horizontal Slash performed by most one handed swords, but its lower range makes it less effective.
Alucard can use this move as an alternate attack for his Basilard and Combat Knife in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. These weapons normally attack using the quicker Overhand Stab attack. But pressing back and then forward before attacking will result in the slash move instead, which while slower and covers the same range, results in more damage. The Combat Knife will also automatically perform the slash as a combo move performed after the stab if two normal attacks are chained together.
In Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, the Knife, Combat Knife, and Baselard all use this as their basic attack. Later games would use a Knife Thrust instead for these weapons, which increased their range.
