- "He saw his nightmare made flesh. Now, everywhere we look, there are nightmares. Terrors rising from the earth."
- — Tera
Horrors Rising from the Earth is the fourth episode of the first season, and the fourth episode overall, of the Netflix original series, Castlevania: Nocturne.
Synopsis[]
- Olrox voices doubts to Mizrak about the Abbot's alliances. Desperate to help a friend, Annette leads a risky mission over Richter's objections.
Plot[]
Deep within the basement of the Abbey, Edouard is bolted to a table where a three-headed creature is going to dissect him, but Abbot Emmanuel stops it. Abbot Emmanuel tries to reason with Edouard that he must obey him as it's his purpose, and then asks if the girl he protected has magical influence over him. He then wonders if there was a flaw in his creation. Taking his sword out of his sheath, Abbot Emmanuel shows Edouard the reflection of his eyes and proclaims that he is who he is.
At Tera's house, the group discusses the Forgemaster being at the Abbey and the Abbot's involvement with him. A debate between Tera and Maria occurs about the culpability that the abbot is in cahoots with the Vampires. As this went on, Annette sat by the windowsill, looking out the window. Richter approached her to try to reason with her about Edouard possibly being a night creature. This then sparks a debate between Annette and Richter on whether or not they should save Edouard and how.
Ultimately, Richter laments that they lack a plan and suggests someone propose one, and Maria tells Richter that they're all scared. However, Richter claims that the only time he was afraid was when he was ten, and Annette claims it was when his mother died at the hands of a vampire. Richter then claims that whenever he proposes a plan should be made, he's called a coward, which Maria argues he's not. Annette chimes in, stating they're just inexperienced, and Tera proposes entering the Abbey through a hidden passageway.
In Mizrak's bedroom, Mizrak and Olrox lay in bed after spending the night together. After Mizrak gets out of bed and prepares to get himself dressed, Olrox asks if the Messiah knows that the Abbot is a forgemaster. Mizrak answers yes, and Olrox concludes that the abbot intends to use his night creatures against the Messiah. Despite Olrox's reasoning, Mizrak dismisses it, and Olrox insists that once the abbot and Messiah's goals are complete, they're turned on each other, and the Messiah will stand on top. Questioning if this is what Mizrak truly wants, Mizrak insists that it is and finishes getting himself dressed; he finishes his conversation with Olrox and heads to the Church. There Drolta arrives with the Marquis and devotees lining the pathway.
Meanwhile, in Machecoul, Tera activates a hidden pull switch leading to the Abbey cellar.
At the Abbey, Marquis introduces the Abbot to Drolta, and Drolta trades insults toward the Abbot as Mizrak, who was also there, chimes in occasionally. Tera's group below follows the dark, narrow pathway into the abbey and briefly talks about Edouard. Returning to the Abbot's side, Drolta mentions that the Marquis has provided the Abbot with a sundry of dead bodies for him to work with and asks how many will be prepared. The Abbot claims that eighteen are ready and more soon will be available, but Drolta expects far more than that and asks how long it'll take. However, the abbot avoids the question and insists that he will live up to their side of the bargain, and Mizrak claims they expect the Messiah to be a Joan of Arc. Hearing that pleases Drolta, and she asks to see the machine itself. With the abbot's permission, Mizrak led the way.
From his cell, Edouard is visited by Olrox, who notes what tragedy made him a night creature and cites the smell of pain, regret, and despair coming from him. Edouard answers that he doesn't know his name or what exactly he is, but all he wants is his freedom, which Olrox agrees with.
On Tera's side, she warns the group about what they witness and encounter as they progress. Richter touts his family history as a Belmont. Tera then hits a switch on the wall, revealing a doorway. Passing through it, Annetta hears Edouard singing in Italian. She immediately heads onward toward the sound's origin and pins a night creature on the way as Olrox stands in front of the machine and investigates the book on the nearby table. As Annette fights off more night creatures and is soon joined by Maria and Richter, the group is confronted by the Abbot's group, which shocks Tera and the Abbot for different reasons. Annette and Maria fight against Drolta, who easily outmatches them, so Tera uses her magic to allow Annette to reunite with Edouard.
As the fight between Drolta against Maria and Tera continues, Drolta slashes Maria's right arm open with her claws. Before she can land another blow, the Abbot stops her and notes that Maria is just a child.
Elsewhere, Richter, who had a night creature at his mercy, was attacked by the Marquis.
On Annette's side, she apologizes to Edouard, who slowly begins to regain his memories with Annette. Tearfully, Annette promised to end Edouard's suffering, but Edouard backing away in shock made Annette regret this as she had believed this was what he wanted. Her time with Edouard is interrupted after Drolta decides to attack her.
After Richter kills the Marquis, he directs his attention toward the Abbot, who has Mizrak by his side. Tera and Maria stand beside Richter, and Tera asks, shocked, what his motive for aligning himself with the vampires was. To his confession, He claims the kingdom of god is in danger, and he must protect it. Richter suggests killing him as an alternative, but Olrox appears behind him, causing him to lose his nerves and flee. Following Richter, the others retreat, and Annette vows to return for Edouard.
Once Tera's group was gone, Olrox picked up Marquis' head, claiming he was just an opportunist who followed the Messiah because she was powerful. Looking at Drolta, Olrox introduced himself and claimed that the Messiah was expecting him. Drolta remembers him as the "Aztec", and as Olrox walks away, the forgemaster book is seen in his possession.
Outside, Tera, Maria, and upset Annette escape the Abbey without Richter.

Quotes[]
- - Olrox: "The Messiah knows, I presume that your Abbot is a Forgemaster."
- - Mizrak: "Of course she knows. She wouldn't be very interested in him if he was just an abbot."
- - Olrox: "So, she knows he means to betray her. He thinks the devils he manufactures will be enough to destory her when the time comes. What do you think? Do you think he's right?"
- - Mizrak: "I don't know what you're talking about."
- - Olrox: "This alliance can't last. The moment you've crushed your enemies, she'll turn on you. The gamble is you wage war and you prevail. Are you sure this path is right?"
- - Mizrak: "There's evil everywhere we look. So we use our heads. Or lose them. Your concern is very touching."
- - Olrox: "So he bribed some demon this power, build him a machine, promise him victory. What was the cost?"
- - Mizrak: "You already know the cost."
- - Olrox: "And who pays it? Just him or all of you? Will you? Which demon? Which demon will claim his price when all this is done?"
- - Mizrak: "Does it matter?"
- - Olrox: "Of course. There are petty demon princelings you can haggle with and cheat. There are demon charlatans whose faces you can laugh in, spin in. There are demons who once were gods... and those who still are."
- - Mizrak: "There's only one God. Just one. That's the only thing I'm sure of. And I've spent my whole life serving him, fighting for him. That hasn't changed and it never will."
- - Olrox: (Watching from the window, Mizrak walking to the Abbey) "One God."
