Insects appear in some Castlevania games, although they are relatively rare. Nonetheless, when they do, they generally do so in gigantic and/or deformed versions of their smaller standard counterparts; this usually being as a result from the influence of evil magical forces.
General information[]
The first kind of true insects that appeared in the Castlevania series were Beetles, which are found in the Kid Dracula series. The Scarab beetle from the Famicom version sits in a sand pit; when the player wanders above it, it jumps up and tries to bite them. Percy Pincher from the Game Boy game inhabits the forests and comes down from the treetops.
Several varieties of moths of various sizes and anthropomorphic qualities have also appeared in the various games that comprise the franchise. These usually hover relatively high above and sprinkle poisonous dust on the ground below. These include the true form of the Princess of Moss boss from Castlevania: Bloodlines, the skull faced Bitterfly from Symphony of the Night and Order of Ecclesia, the giant moth King Moth from Circle of the Moon, one of the forms of the Shadow boss from Harmony of Dissonance, and the cryptozoological Mothman from Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin.
The Underground Gallery in Circle of the Moon is infested with a variety of insects and other dangerous lifeforms. The Death Mantis is a giant preying mantis with long claws. Killer Bees are dangerous enemies that can strike quickly from large distances. The King Moth can also be found here.
In Portrait of Ruin, Killer Bees are large purple insects with human skulls for heads. They swarm around skeleton-shaped Bee Hives and will attack with deadly stingers if any heroes get near them or rattle the Bee Hive.
Insects are sometimes part of a boss attack associated with them. Flies and maggots coming from the rotting flesh of the giants Beelzebub's (the "Lord of the Flies") and the Forgotten One are hazards in these boss battles. Abaddon, who takes the form of a locust-man himself, directs a swarm of locusts in his attacks.
Other insect creatures include the Beetle from Belmont's Revenge, which is really an Arthroverta, and the Man Eater worms that live inside giant skulls.
