Intelligence, commonly abbreviated as INT, is a statistic featured in the Castlevania series. In most of the games it appears in, Intelligence determines the strength of sub-weapon and magic attacks, and similar actions. Although not always the case, a general rule of thumb is that if an attack uses up Hearts or MP and/or does not make use of the hero's primary weapons, it receives a damage bonus from Intelligence.

Game specific information[]

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]

The purpose of the INT stat is to add a damage bonus to attacks made with spells, sub-weapons, forms, and familiars.

The formula to calculate Alucard's total INT bonus is:

(x × 0.2) + (y × 0.8) + 0 or 1 = INT Bonus

in which x is his natural INT and y is the bonus from equipment. So if Alucard's base INT is 99 and the bonus from his equipment is 65:

(99 × 0.2) + (65 × 0.8) + 0 or 1 = 19.8 + 52 + 0 or 1 = 71.8 or 72.8

The decimals are truncated, and the 0 or 1 in the formula means that an extra point may or may not be added to the total, which will be determined randomly every time Alucard attacks with an INT-based move. If the total INT is negative, the INT bonus will be zero or 1 (due to the extra point that is added randomly). So the total INT bonus in this case will be either 71 or 72. Spells, sub-weapons, and form attacks have a constant (their own ATT value) that will be added to the total INT bonus to determine the damage dealt.

For example, the Gas Cloud relic has an ATT of 20. Against an enemy with 0 DEF (neutral to the Poison attribute), it will deal 91 or 92 damage since 71/72 (bonus INT) + 20 (Gas Cloud's ATT) = 91/92 damage. The Soul Steal spell has an ATT of 15, so against an enemy with 0 DEF (neutral to the Hit attribute), it will deal 86 or 87 damage per hit, and so on.

As can be seen by the formula, bonus INT is four times more effective than base INT. INT also affects the duration of the Dark Metamorphosis effect.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon[]

  • Unlike the rest of the games in which this stat makes an appearance, Intelligence primarily determines how much MP Nathan Graves regenerates per second of in-game time. The rate of this regeneration is equal to 1/100th of his total INT. If the result ends in a fraction, it is rounded down.
    • An exception to the rounding down rule is if Nathan's INT is below 100; in this case, rounding down would make him unable to regenerate MP at all.
