Into the Abyss is the fifth episode of the second season, and the 13th episode overall, of the Netflix original series, Castlevania: Nocturne.
Synopsis[]
- Maria confronts her dark side as Annette and Richter follow orders to find and destroy the city's undead. Olrox considers his fate in the fight ahead.
Plot[]
In 1789 CE, at Sekhmet's tomb, Drolta announces that Erzsebet is ready. She consumes a jar of Sekhmet's blood, transforming her into her Sekhmet form.
In the present, Drolta holds the mummified corpse of Sekhmet in her arms as the sun rises on the horizon.
While Richter and Annette walk out of the museum as Alucard walks out of the river. He regroups with Richter and Annette, and Richter asks what they should do now. Alucard scold Richter for revealing their destination to them, which causes the entire scenario. Siding with Richter, Annette reasons that it wouldn't take a sorcerer to predict their destination, and she argues they thought he had killed Drolta. Alucard softly sighs and suggests they prepare the city for what's to come. Annette suggests a couple of groups, and Alucard volunteers to take care of it while ordering the two to handle the vampire nests in the city. Richter asks Alucard why they're not following him, but he coldly responds that he's given them their tasks and should follow through with it.
After the two sides go their separate ways, Annette runs up to Richter and tells him that Alucard is upset at himself, not Richter. He then asks if Annette's ancestors are speaking to her; she denies it, but notes they're around and acting quiet. Richter then remarks that he's glad his ancestors don't talk to him, as they'd be like Juste, which is insufferable. It's then that Richter elaborates his Belmont Clan lineage. However, that all changed after witnessing Olrox murder his mother, which he claims died for nothing. For the years onward, he lived as if he was the higher purpose; Annette then consoles Richter, relating to the loss of his mother, with her own mother.
Their heart-to-heart moment is interrupted by the presence of vampires, and by nightfalls, Annette and Richter run around Paris, eliminating them.
At the Abbey, Olrox visits the site where Abbot Emmanuel was killed by Maria. There, he finds the Tome affiliated with the Infernal Machine, and upon visiting the area, he's met by a being called Old Man Coyote, or Mephistopheles, and is aware of the deals he makes. However, Olrox rejects Old Man Coyote and notes that the Tome and Old Man Coyote do not belong there in that realm. Olrox then tosses the Tome into the Infernal Machine's fire.
Meanwhile, Maria stares into the dark summoning void she created and is joined by Juste. Maria notes that she knows he thinks he did a terrible thing by killing her father, and Juste compliments her as a sorceress at her age. However, he then states that she draws her magic from an ancient source she perhaps doesn't fully understand. Maria argues that if Juste is arguing the same Fire and Ice logic with her, they're then met by Tera who claims that Emmanuel deserved to die. Tera appears from the nearby forest, and Maria walks toward her despite Juste warning her not to. Standing before her mother, Maria compliments the power she now possesses, but Juste refutes that notion. He convince her not to surrender to the darkness and elaborates on the joys and positives of the world in living which bring Tera and Maria to the realization. Despite this, Maria succumbs to wanting to live forever, citing how he was right about saying how murdering her father made her something she could no longer return to being, the young idealist that she was. Maria then offers her neck to the astonished Tera, as Juste ignites his hands with fire and demands that Tera back off. Maria tell Juste to stay out of what she wants to do it with her life. She retaliates against by using the dark portal way behind her to summon a creature to attack Juste, but Tera demands she stop and send it back, claiming it's not what she wants. Tera then claims it's not what Maria wants either, making Maria calm down and retract the summoned beast back into the portal. Approaching Maria, Tera places her hand on her cheek, saying she loves her with all of her heart and just wants to be by her side, but if Maria is to find herself again, it can't be with her, coming to the conclusion that her presence is leading Maria to. Realizing what her mother is doing, Maria asks where Tera is going. Stepping away from her daughter, Tera say goodbye to Maria and claims she needs to find herself, too. With that, Tera entrusts Juste to take care of Maria, and then Tera runs away as Maria tearfully chases after her, making Tera cry herself. Soon, Maria trips and falls as she was left sobbing on the ground, now that her mother left her. Juste runs by her, staring at where Tera has disappeared.
Edouard performs for the Night Creatures at the Vendée, and Erzsebet watches from the second-floor balcony, remarking how she has no remorse for their deceased forgemaster. She then comments that Drolta will soon return with what she wants, and she'll have them deal with the night creatures. As Edouard's performance continues, Erzsebet laments how the château bores her and wants to be worshipped, but not there.
Annette and Richter continue slaying Vampires back in Paris, pursuing a couple of them into a catacomb. Navigating through the area, they have a lighthearted moment together before being ambushed by a swarm of vampires, and they're all slain by the two.
Returning to Juste's side, he and Maria sit by a bonfire, and Maria is morose over the separation from her mother. She comments that a war is happening, which Juste suggests they warn others about, but Maria declines, stating they need to fight in it.
Elsewhere, Mizrak prayed until Olrox appeared from behind him. Mizrak learns that Olrox is leaving to return to his home and that despite the repercussions for betraying Erzsebet, he's willing to take them. Mizrak suggests that Olrox stay and fight; however, he refuses, citing he knows where the flowing tides favor more. Olrox then talks about how the Spanish Christians wiped out his people and his God. Mizrak then asks if Olrox was still human when the Spanish Christians attacked his land, and Olrox confirms it, stating one of them changed him into a vampire. Olrox offers a counteroffer to Mizrak's offer to follow him instead, which Mizrak refuses. So, Olrox wishes Mizrak well, and Mizrak hopes that Olrox's soul finds peace. With that, Olrox disappears.
In Paris, Alucard watches a group of vampires affiliated with the cult try to attack some nationalists; however, he stops them by talking about his history from when he was last in Paris. After chastising their messiah, Alucard attacks the vampire group and defeats them all, saving the leader for last.
The vampires tried to enter the building. Maximilien Robespierre gave a compassionate speech that was interrupted by the presence of Alucard, who carried in a decapitated vampire's head. He tossed it onto the table that Robespierre spoke on, warning of the incoming army of vampires that would attack the city. The revelation left Robespierre speechless.
At the Vendée, the Captain asks Edouard why he sings, and he responds that when he does, he's free, as are those who chose to listen. Contrarily, the Captain argues they're not free and warns he'll have his tongue cut out if he continues singing. Hence, Edouard suggests they all sing together, by cutting off their heads. The Captain directs her attention to the night creature that attacked him earlier, and Edouard smiles at her.
In Machecoul, Erzsebet rides her chariot through the city, where she meets her sympathizers. A cloaked Mizrak is also present, and Erzsebet informs the crowd that a revolutionary has killed the Abbot. She goads the crowd, stating that the Abbott once compared her to Joan of Arc. However, she argues that unlike her, she wasn't burnt at stake and stands defiantly before them all, then promises to burn all of their enemies. Drolta then appears from the sky carrying Sekhmet's corpse. The mere sight makes the people around them fall to their knees and pray. As they do this, Drolta claims that Erzsebet can finally be whole.
On Richter's side, the two defeated all the vampires there and took a break in a ruined room filled with water. Richter then asked Annette if her mother was there. She confirmed it, stating that all of her mothers throughout the generations were, and then asked about Richter's mother. To that question, Richter listed off positive traits about his mother and what she did to train him as a Belmont. He also mentions the odd coincidence that they both have lost their mothers in their lives. After a pregnant pause, Richter claims that Belmonts are starting to become a thing of the past and that there likely isn't a place for them in present times. Still, Annette claims there is a place for him in the world, and the two hold hands. Before they proceed to kiss, Annette recalls that part of all of her ancestors is always there, including her mentor Cécile when she visits the spirit realm. They do that because a part of them is already there, but they wonder if it's the same with Sekhmet and recite the three parts of God's soul. She then hypothesizes if Sekhmet is in the spirit realm, too, which Richter claims is the third part of her soul. Annette confirms it and realizes the spirits want her to enter the spirit realm and locate Sekhmet. Then, the demonic figure that followed Annette revealed himself to be Papa Legba, and behind him was Cécile, who extended her hand to her. With that, Annette realizes that this is what the spirits wanted.

- - Juste: "It shouldn't feel good, Maria. The world can be a dark place, full of horror. But if you surrender to the darkness, what's the point in living? None of us counts for much. All of us will be forgotten eventually. But there's something miraculous about us being here at all. To see this world. Breathe its air. Smell the forest at night. Feel the sun on our skin. If we're still able to do that... there is a point in living."
- - Maria: (Realization) "And maybe there's even a point in living forever. He's right This was different. Killing my father. This was murder. I can never go back to who I was." (She turn to face Tera and exposed her neck) "But I could be with you forever" (Tera gasps at Maria's suggestion)

- - Olrox: "I know when a war is lost. My people knew splendor which would make your head swim. Great cities, vast palaces, magnificent temples to honor our terrifying gods. When we first saw the Spanish Christians, we laughed. How could they threaten us? But I remember the moment when I knew. in the fires which destroyed Tenochtitlan, I knew that it was over. And our terrifying gods could do nothing to save us."
- - Mizrak: "Perhaps your gods were the problem. When the Spanish conquered you, you were still human?"
- - Olrox: "Yes. One of them made me a vampire. Something else they brought with them from the Old World. Come with me."
- - Mizrak: "And spend a lifetime running from her? No."
- - Olrox: "Then take care in the battle to come."
- - Mizrak: "If you have a soul, Olrox, and maybe you do, I hope it finds peace."
