"O, the world of death is fantastic! I Must tell my family of this wonderful feeling! My lovely wife Mary will be next, then our little Henry and anybody else who drops by to visit! I must prepare all their gravestones! O, great and powerful Dracula! I pledge to be your servant forever!"
— Message found in J. A. Oldrey's Diary

Master J. A. Oldrey (館主J・A・オルドレー Kanshu J. A. Orudorē?) is a character and a recurring boss in Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. He is a vampire loyal to Count Dracula who was once a good and wealthy man owning a luxurious villa.

History[]

J. A. Oldrey is described by Mary as having been a good man before he was turned into a vampire by Gilles de Rais and Actrise. Once a vampire, Oldrey began to desire the blood of his wife and son, with his diary even indicating that he finds the concept of being dead to be "wonderful".

Cornell first encounters him inside the Villa, where Oldrey is seen pounding on a door and telling Mary to open it because he wants a drink. Mary refuses to open the door. At first, it appears to be a domestic issue until Oldrey transforms into his vampire form and attacks Cornell, since he is unable to get to Mary. Cornell defeats Oldrey who turns into a bat and vanishes into mist.

Eight years later, Reinhardt and Carrie meet Oldrey in the Villa as well. Once they enter the building, Oldrey attacks them and is defeated, vanishing again into mist.

Oldrey is then found at the end of the stage in a crypt, feeding on a woman. Discarding the seemingly dead woman when presented with, as he puts it, the "main course", he confronts the vampire hunters one last time. Oldrey does not run away this time and is permanently eliminated, only expressing disbelief that he was able to be killed by humans. Unfortunately, his victim arises as another vampire Reinhardt and Carrie must take down.

Trivia[]

  • His boss battle theme in Castlevania is shared with the female vampire, Rosa, Actrise and Malus (the latter during the first phase).
  • In Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Reinhardt and Carrie get to fight Oldrey in his unique model version instead of the generic vampire villager model he used to have, although it is a watered down version of the previous Castlevania 64 boss battle, as he lacks his spinning claw attack, as well as the agility that helped him evade Carrie's homing magic blasts.
