Julia Belmont

Julia Belmont (ジュリア・ベルモンド, Juria Berumondo^?) is a character in the Netflix original animated series, Castlevania: Nocturne. She was the descendant of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, the daughter of Juste Belmont, and the mother of Richter Belmont. A skilled and courageous vampire huntress, wielder of the whip, she seeks to protect her family at any cost.

She was voiced by Sophie Skelton.

History[]

Not much is known about Julia's background besides being a descendant of the legendary Belmont family of monster hunters. The little that is known about her recent past comes from the account of Olrox. Olrox was in a romantic relationship with a proud Mohican revolutionary warrior native of a little town in Massachusetts who was fighting against the colonists. Having been turned into a vampire by Olrox, Julia killed him. Thirsting to avenge him, Olrox started to track Julia to kill her as well. Aware of the danger that was looming over her and her loved ones, one night of 1783, Julia and her 10 years old son, Richter, were at the Boston docks seeking to embark him on a ship that would take him to France, where he could be safe at the care of Julia's friend, Tera. However, at that moment, Olrox suddenly intercepted them and challenged Julia to a duel. Using her family whip in combination with her many magical abilities, Julia was able to fight him back with even odds, and at one point, she even gained the upper hand in the fight. Olrox was then forced to employ one of his most powerful resources by shapeshifting into a giant serpent-like dragon. However, when Olrox switched his attention toward Richter, Julia lost her edge trying to protect him and was subsequently pinned by the monster. Unable to resist the beast's continuous attack for much longer, she finally was stabbed by the beast from side to side with its tail and died.

Since Olrox had achieved his revenge, he didn't take it against Richter and spared him. The memory of his mother's murder had a great impact on the boy, making him lose his still-awakening magical powers and having nightmares of dragons for many years. However, this same event is what made him reawaken his magic years later and become an even more powerful warrior.

Appearance[]

Julia appears as a youthful adult woman in her prime with pale skin, violet eyes with arched eyebrows, almond brown hair tied in a low ponytail with a portion obscuring her right eye, and a beauty mark under the left side of her full pink lips. In terms of clothing, Julia wore a dark blue flowing tailcoat with a white interior and the Belmont Clan insignia on a gold tag. Julia wore a white top under her coat that showed some of her bust and a black choker around her neck. Covering Julia's hands were a pair of black leather gloves. For trousers, she had on brown form-fitting breeches with an extra belt that holstered the Vampire Killer whip, and her footwear was a pair of black 16th Century jackboots with silver buckles.

Personality[]

Julia was a loving mother and a brave vampire hunter, befitting the Belmont name. Aware that her son would be in danger if he stayed with her, Julia tried to send Richter to safety. While her son felt as if he was being sent off, Julia tried to make sure he understood the reason. When faced with Olrox, Julia bravely fought until her last breath, doing all she could to protect Richter.

According to Juste, Julia was a proud woman, claiming she didn't need her father's help when she moved to the new world to hunt vampires on her own.

Magic: Being a descendant of Sypha Belnades, Julia was a powerful mage with the ability to control the elements. She and her son, Richter, are one of the few Belmonts alive and capable of performing magic in both an offensive and defensive manner.
- Pyrokinesis: When fighting, Julia mainly uses her left hand to cast spells while she uses her right hand to wield weapons. These spells are mostly fire-based and mainly comprised of either short flame bursts or a long and large stream of fire.
- Cryokinesis: Julia can also produce many ice needles, which she then throws as projectiles (an attack Richter would also frequently use during adulthood). Additionally, she can create a strong ice shield to block attacks.

Abilities[]

Master martial artists and melee combatant: During her battle with Olrox, Julia can be seen employing a wide assortment of punches and kicks while proficiently wielding a dagger which she uses both offensively and defensively.
Weapon mastery: Julia is highly skilled with her family whip, which she generally uses in combination with her magical powers.

Her design appears to be inspired by the appearance of Richter Belmont in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night made by artist Ayami Kojima.
Her name could be a reference to Julius Belmont, the last known descendant of the Belmont Clan in the main timeline of the games, or alternatively, Julia Laforeze from Curse of Darkness.
Her voice actress, Sophie Skelton, and Graham McTavish, who played Dracula in the original series, both starred in the Starz drama series Outlander.
