Keys unlock locked treasure chests and doors in various Castlevania games.
Game specific information[]
Vampire Killer[]
Keys were first introduced in the MSX opus, where a Yellow Key opens chests, while a White Key opens locked doors.
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood/Castlevania: Dracula X[]
The Key returns in both games, where it takes the place of a sub-weapon and can even be used to attack enemies. While Richter Belmont swings the key directly, Maria Renard will send her dove to carry the key.
Its Item Crash makes Richter levitate in the air for a brief moment while holding the key in one hand. He is impervious to attack during this animation, and if the key makes contact with an enemy, this will take damage. The key itself does more damage than any other sub-weapon, being four and a half times more powerful than a single whip strike. In case of Richter, he also makes a "?" reaction when using the key without a door.
They unlock doors where Annette and Maria have been locked up in.
The keys work differently in each game:
- In Rondo of Blood, there are three keys which unlock any door but disappear when used.
- In Dracula X, there is only one key in the entire game; it doesn't disappear after it unlocks the first door and the player must keep it until they reach the second one. Additionally, if the first door is not opened, the key will be unable to open the second door. The key also does the same damage as the whip.
Castlevania (N64)/Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness[]
During their adventures, Cornell, Reinhardt and Carrie must pick up many keys necessary to open accesses in order to progress until Dracula.
The Storeroom Key is the only key unneeded to pick up to progress. It is only used to open a door in the Villa containing a White Jewel and various objects.
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon[]
The Last Key Magic Item must be used on the door leading to Dracula. After defeating Hugh, Nathan can find this key in the next room.
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance[]

- Main article: Lure Key
- Main article: Skull Key
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow[]
The game files contain unused leftover data of the Skull Key.
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence[]
Five keys are can be found in Walter's Castle. Each bear the name of one of the Four Sacred Beasts and open doors giving access to relics:
- The Black Turtle Key (玄武の鍵 Genbu no Kagi?) allows to unlock the Black Turtle Door in the Dark Palace of Waterfalls and can be found in the Ghostly Theatre.
- The Blue Dragon Key (青龍の鍵 Seiryū no Kagi?) allows to unlock the Blue Dragon Door in the Garden Forgotten by Time and can be found in the second basement of Dark Palace of Waterfalls.
- The Red Phoenix Key (朱雀の鍵 Suzaku no Kagi?) allows to unlock the Red Phoenix Door in the Anti-Soul Mysteries Lab and can be found in the Garden Forgotten by Time.
- The White Tiger Key (白虎の鍵 Byakko no Kagi?) allows to unlock the White Tiger Door in the Ghostly Theatre and can be found in the House of Sacred Remains.
- The Yellow Dragon Key (黄竜の鍵 Kōryū/Ōryū no Kagi?) allows to unlock the Yellow Dragon Door in the House of Sacred Remains and can be found in the third floor of Anti-Soul Mysteries Lab. Note that this is the only key whose name does not designate one of the Four Sacred Beasts appearing in the series.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow[]
The Tower Key allows to open the gate located a couple of floors below from where the key is found, giving access to the Cursed Clock Tower. It can be found in the Condemned Tower, in a room situated two rooms left from Gergoth's boss room; however, since the floor gets destroyed during the battle, the player is forced to climb the tower a second time and jump across the gaps left in the main tower's shaft in order to reach it.
Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth[]
Many keys can be found in each level, which are used to take alternate paths through the stages or to open doors leading to bonuses.
