Historical background[]

Machecoul (Breton: Machikoul) is a former commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France. On January 1st, 2016 it was merged into the new commune of Machecoul-Saint-Même. Its 5,732 inhabitants are called Machecoulais. It was the site of First Massacre of Machecoul, the opening of the War in the Vendée in 1793.

Overview[]

Machecoul is a commune settled along a large hill in France. For a town of these characteristics, it is considerably well developed, having many relatively tall buildings. Its main landmark is without a doubt its abbey, an old building that stands above all others in town. Machecoul doesn't only extend to its more urbanized areas, though, and some houses located in the surrounding woods and hills can also be considered to be included in the commune.

Machecoul is the main setting of Castlevania: Nocturne, and most of the events in the story take place between it and the nearby Vendée château, which can be reached on foot by crossing a few nearby hills.
