The Merman Statue (called "Mermaid Statue" in the Japanese version and resembling one) is a relic in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night that summons the Oarsman to appear at a location where he normally doesn't appear.
Description[]
As its name implies, it is a golden statuette of a mermaid. It can be found inside a small cave located on the westernmost point of the Underground Caverns by either taking a ride on the Ferryman's boat across the underground waterfall lake (where he will comment upon meeting Alucard for the first time) or simply by flying across using either the Form of Bat or the Power of Mist.
Even though obtaining the Merman Statue may seem trivial at first, it is required in order to reach the Holy Symbol, a far superior Relic. Outside the Scylla Wyrm's miniboss room, strike the ground on the area that has a light blue coloring to destroy it and uncover a hidden path to a flooded cavern below. A dock is found in this location, and if Alucard is in possession of the Merman Statue, the Ferryman will appear here and be available to transport him across the river (making a different comment about it). During the trip, Alucard will need to crouch a couple of times to prevent the low ceiling from pushing him into the water below. Just before the end of the river toward the east bend, there will be a large metal gate that will only open if the Ferryman is present (Alucard cannot open it on his own). Once open, the gate will remain this way. Past this gate is the Holy Symbol, and once obtained, Alucard can simply trek through the waters without sustaining damage, and thus without requiring any further assistance from the Ferryman.

Trivia[]
- The original Japanese name of this relic is "Mermaid Statue" (人魚の像) and it is indeed shaped as a mermaid; however, it was renamed to "Merman Statue" in the English localization. It is unknown if this was a translation error or due to censorship.
