The talisman is enclosed with a letter addressed to Soma Cruz by his childhood friend, Mina Hakuba. He receives it in the Demon Guest House when Arikado follows him into the castle to keep an eye on him, and delivers Mina's letter to Soma.
Despite having no apparent use, it becomes important midway through the game when Celia Fortner, the leader of a sect planning to bring the new Dark Lord into the world, attempts to bring forth the darkness in Soma's soul and create a new Dark Lord by murdering Mina right in front of him.
If the talisman is not equipped during this event, Soma gives in to his rage and despair, and embraces the evil within him. However, if Soma is wearing Mina's Talisman, he will hold off the darkness just long enough for Genya Arikado to arrive and reveal that Celia's little act is just a ruse: Mina is still safe at home and the creature killed before Soma's eyes is just a doppelganger. This revelation allows Soma to regain control of himself and prevent the darkness from taking over, letting him continue to fight against evil.
It also appears in Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls as one of the most powerful pieces of armor in the game.
