"These dark, monstrous things. She should leave them alone. Or they'll corrupt her and destroy her. Is that what you want?"
Juste to Tera after Maria killed herfather.

Monstrous Things is the fourth episode of the second season, and the 12th episode overall, of the Netflix original series, Castlevania: Nocturne.

Synopsis[]

Annette, Richter and Alucard seek Sekhmet's mummy at the Louvre, where spirits seem to be lighting the way. Juste intervenes in a deadly confrontation.

Plot[]

In 1614 CE, on a dark rainy at Erzsebet Báthory's castle, a cloaked Drolta infiltrates the place and enters the room Erzsebet sat in after killing the guard stationed outside of it. Drolta calls out Erzsebet by her full name and title, alarming Erzsebet, who realizes that Drolta is a vampire after she uncloaks herself. Erzsebet demands to know who sent her, but Drolta dodges the question, claiming she's committed several crimes by murdering several boys and girls. She then compliments Erzsebet as the most evil woman in the world, but Erzsebet scorns Drolta for using the word murder to define her actions. Erzsebet then argues the double standard of how many people the men who imprisoned her had killed. By "cursing" them, she struck fear into their hearts, making them only imprison her. Although Erzsebet thought that Drolta was there to kill her, she claims that she plans on making her a God if she proves worthy, which Erzsebet boldly claims she is. However, Erzsebet was confused by what Drolta meant by being a "God" and questioned if they existed. To that point, Drolta mentions her God Sekhmet, the Goddess of War. The revelation intrigued Erzsebet. When Erzsebet asked who Drolta was, Drolta answered she was Erzsebet's faithful servant.

In the present, Annette struggles not to be pulled into the portal that the demon stood in front of, and when she does so, she snaps out of her trance again. Richter then asks if Annette was alright as the demonic figure stands close by. Alucard quietly watches the interaction between the two and walks away as the two follow, and the demonic figure walks away himself.

As they walk onward, Alucard informs the two that a century ago, the English executed their own king, and Richter asks if it happens often. Alucard mentions the current frequency in France and its effects on the people, which would be spearheaded by the "Vampire Messiah". Richter then notes that those who oppose her won't stand a chance, and Alucard confirms this, then notes they're heading to where he believes her remains lay. Annette was distracted by the demonic figure and when Richter asks her again if she's fine, Annette vows to give Sekhmet a second death.

Back in Machecoul, Maria rides her bird Familiar, to the Abbey where she finds her father Abbot Emmanuel praying. She asks him if he believes praying enough will save his soul, but Emmanuel denies it, so Maria follows up asking why. Emmanuel claims he wasn't praying for himself, which Maria scoffs at and asks if he still believes God moves through him, and he apologizes for what happened to her mother; however, Maria refutes the apology and calls him out for believing that Erzsebet would only target her if she were sacrificed, and Emmanuel thought she'd descend into Heaven. Not believing any of his claim, Maria point out she's not even a good Christian, who goes to church to say her prayers, and her full support is for the revolution, which has declared Emmanuel as their enemy. Knowing that he was putting her through a pointless sacrifice just to save himself. Night Creatures surround the area, and Maria uses her familiars to dispose of them all. Right as Juste enters the place, he tries to stop Maria; however, she summons a Wolf to block his way. Maria, succumbing to the dark side of herself, summons an azure dragon into the Abbey, leaving Emmanuel aghast by its presence. Emmanuel fearfully claims that it was never his intention to harm her. Still, the words trigger Maria, who allows the dragon to move forward as Juste rushes toward her, and Emmanuel claims his goal of protecting the kingdom of God. The Dragon whips its tail, making Juste fall back a bit, and he then tries to reason with her that what she's doing her mother wouldn't want, but Maria questions it. Juste claims it was to stop her, and Maria asks why, which Juste said it's because she's a good person and that power should be used for good instead of killing corrupt people. For a second, light returned to Maria's eyes, only for them to quickly turn black again and all the world's problem are because of corrupt people like her father, who's on his knee begging for God. Maria's azure dragon then incinerates Emmanuel, who screams as he becomes a charred corpse. The black soot and residue the dragon's flames left converged on Emmanuel's corpse and formed a dark, towering figure. The mysterious figure smiles and raspily laughs as it absorbs Emmanuel's remains, leaving Maria and Juste shocked at what they witnessed.

Meanwhile, at the Vendée courtyard, Edouard, standing beside Jacques and most of the night creatures, who screamed and howled after sensing that their Forgemaster is dead as Olrox, who now has the brand on his forehead listens from the second-floor balcony. Edouard's performance was interrupted by another night creature who lunged at him from behind.

Back at the Abbey, Maria tries to de-summon the azure dragon; however, it doesn't listen to her command, and in a moment of desperation, Juste reawakens his magical ability. He uses his magic to attack the dragon, allowing it to finally return to where it came from. Shuddering from her experience, Maria passes out into Juste's arms. Juste then cradles her and spots Tera by the doorway. He walks by her, and she asks Maria to be taken somewhere safe. he remarks that Maria should stop summoning dark creatures, warning they'll corrupt and destroy her, and asks if that's what she wants. Tera then walks over to where Emmanuel's charred remains are, and after looking down at the place, she uncharacteristically smiles at the ashes of the man she once loved.

In Paris, Richter's group reaches their destination as two-night creatures stay perched on the building they had intended to enter.

On Juste's side, he rests Maria's unconscious body on a wall, and he's soon joined by Mizrak, who carries a dead pheasant in hand. Juste introduces himself to Mizrak as Richter's grandfather and then tells Mizrak about what Maria had done back at the Abbey. As Mizrak questions Juste if Emmanuel face his death with any kind of dignity, Maria awakens saying that he died like a coward and realizes Juste's identity; she also complains that he didn't need to save her as she could handle it. However, Juste denied that notion citing was different than casting Fire and Ice; the monsters she summoned could be from the same place her father was sent, but Maria denies it. Juste claims that the monsters she summoned originated from her despair and would rot and consume her, but she rejects the advice, claiming he's Richter's grandfather, not hers. After Maria walks away, Juste talks to Mizrak about not how Monks don't have kids and that they take a "Vow of Chastity", which Mizrak is notably perturbed by.

Walking through the museum, Annette spots the demonic being standing beside spirits. As they walk onward, Alucard spots the Mona Lisa Smile and details its history to Richter and Annette. They then ask a museum attendant there for directions to where the Egyptian artifacts were.

Outside, Drolta flies over the museum.

Back at Maria's side, she prepares herself a bed, and Juste asks if she needs anything. But she asks to be left alone, so Juste sits outside guarding her doorway.

Meanwhile, as Mizrak prepares the pheasant, he spots Olrox and sees that he's been branded. He believes that Olrox has finally submitted to the cult, but Olrox remains defiant. Still, Mizrak is concerned for Olrox, who details that Erzsebet's army is planning on marching toward Paris, and Drolta is already there to kill his friends. Before Olrox walks away, Mizrak warns him that Juste was there, but Olrox downplays his presence as he can handle him as easily as Julia. Mizrak then accuses Olrox of killing out of revenge, which killing is all he does, and is disgusted that associating with him taints him. Even so, Olrox comments that his heart is not hate or disgust, but longing, desire, or love. Standing close to Mizrak, he starts to cry and denounces him as a spawn of Satan, which saddened Olrox as watch Mizrak leave.

Back at the museum, Annette spots the demon again alongside the spirits there. She asks the theme to guide her to where she wants to go and tells Richter and Alucard about this. Richter then asks why they weren't informed before, and Annette confesses she didn't know their motive before. Alucard asks if they speak to her, and she denies it. Annette admits they were angry before, but the ones there seem lost, but supposes she's the one that's lost. Alucard then asks where they're directing them, and Annette points out to a crate in the back, which, after Alucard inspects, finds Sekhmet's corpse inside.

As Richter proposes what they can do with it, Drolta appears with a few night creatures and demands that they hand it over. Drolta mentions how Alucard once killed her, and now she'll return the favor. Alucard fights against Drolta, leaving, briefly, leaving Annette and Richter to fight against the night creatures until he finishes off two of them himself, and Richter and Annette finish off the remaining one. This allows Drolta to steal Sekhmet's corpse and flee the area only to be pursued by Alucard, but Drolta manages to send him flying into the river below. Richter watches the scene unfold and informs Annette of their failure. However, Annette was overwhelmed by the presence of the spirits there, demanding to know what they wanted from her.

Quotes[]

-Drolta: "Countess Erzsebet Báthory"
-Erzsebet: "Ah, a vampire. Who sent you?"
-Drolta: "I've heard you committed many terrible crimes, countess. The murder of who knows how many boys and girls. The most evil woman in the world. Which makes you perfect."
-Erzsebet: "Murder is a vulgar word. And the men who imprisoned me, how many have they murdered? They would murder me. But I cursed them, and they're afraid."
-Drolta: "Instead, they lock you in this tower to wither and die, forgotten and alone."
-Erzsebet: "If you're here to kill me, do it now."
-Drolta: "I'm here to make you a god. If you prove to be worthy."
-Erzsebet: "Of course I'm worthy. But what do you mean? What is a god? Is there such a thing?"
-Drolta: "I mean, 'She before whome evil trembles'. Sekhmet. Goddess of war."
-Erzsebet: "And who are you?"
-Drolta: "I am your faithful servant."
-Maria: "Do you think God will save you if you pray enough?"
-Abbot Emmanuel: "No."
-Maria: "Why do you pray then?"
-Abbot Emmanuel: "I wasn't praying for myself."
-Maria: (Scoffs) "Do you still think God moves through you?"
-Abbot Emmanuel: "I am sorry about your mother, Maria."
-Maria: "No. You're not. You were going to let Erzsebet do it to me. Though, to begin with, you thought she was only going to kill me, and that was all right too."
-Abbot Emmanuel: "I knew your soul would ascend to Heaven."
-Maria: "Did you? I'm not a good Christian. I don't come to church. I don't say my prayers. The revolution, which I support with all my heart, has declared you its bitter enemy. So if you're right in what you believe about God, I mean, I wasn't bound for Heaven anyway." (Glancing over some of the night creatures in the Abbey. Maria summons darker version of her familiar to kill them all as Juste arrive. Maria summon a wolf to make sure Juste doesn't interfere. Then her portal become larger as Maria summons a dragon as it let out a roar, causing Emmanuel to shaken in fear.)
-Abbot Emmanuel: "Maria, I never wanted to hurt you." (this only angers Maria further)
-Juste: "Maria." (Emmanuel gasps as he back against the cross)
-Abbot Emmanuel: (Hoarsely) "I only wanted to protect the kingdom of God."
-Juste: "Maria! This isn't what your mother wants."
-Maria: How do you know what my mother wants."
-Juste: "She sent me here to stop you."
-Maria: "Why?!"
-Juste: "Because you're good, Maria. Your power is a force for good in the world. Not for killing stupid old men."
-Maria: "Most of what's bad in the world is because of stupid old men!"
-Abbot Emmanuel: (hoarsely) " Oh, God. Oh, heavenly Father."
-Juste: "Maria!" (Maria lets out a powerful yell. The dragon incinerates her father. Emmanuel screams as he burns to death.)
-Juste: "You must be the monk. I'm Juste Belmont. Richter's grandfather."
-Mizrak: "Is she all right?"
-Juste: "She just killed her father."
-Mizrak: "Did the devil come?"
-Juste: "I don't know if it was the devil. Something came."
-Mizrak: "Did he accept his death? Did he face it with courage?"
-Maria: (Scoffs) "No." (Mizrak sighs) "So that's who you are. You do Speaker magic. Though you didn't when you were fighting my mother."
-Juste: "When Richter regained his magic, he said it was because he had to."
-Maria: "You didn't need to do it for me. I could have saved myself."
-Juste: "No, you couldn't Maria. Fire and ice and wind, they're just the elements. Things in this world we learned how to bend to our will. But those things you conjure, they're a place we don't understand. Maybe the same place where your father's soul was dragged."
-Maria: "Of course it's not the same place."
-Juste: "Whatever it is, those monsters, they're conjured from despair, Maria. Despair will rot you from inside out."
-Maria: "You're Richter's grandfather. Not mine. So maybe you should mind your own business." (Walks away)
-Juste: "You don't have children, do you, monks? Well you're not supposed to. I've never understood that vow-of-chastity business, to be honest. Doesn't sound healthy to me." (Mizrak sweats nervously). "Not having children though, that makes a lot of sense" (Juste point where Maria walks away).
