Mourneblade in Castlevania
Appearance in Symphony of the Night
The Mourneblade is a powerful weapon, granting a very minor defense boost but having a very respectable attack boost of +36, one of the highest bonuses for a one-handed sword in the game and the same as the Crissaegrim, though the Crissaegrim's four hits per swing mean the Mourneblade has nothing like the same practical damage output. Its real bonus, however, comes from the automatic Soul Steal effect, which heals 8 Hit Points every time the sword strikes an enemy or breakable object; it does not have to deal damage to that enemy, only hit it, and therefore works on the invincible Stone Skull. A Soul Steal spell has a Hit attack value of 15.
The Mourneblade is a more reliable source of healing than the other healing swords Gurthang and Muramasa, since the latter two only heal when blood actually touches Alucard after striking a bloody enemy, and Gurthang only when its command move is used. On the other hand, because it Soul Steals rather than using blood healing, it receives no benefit from the Bloodstone, though Alucard can still equip the Bloodstone and use Dark Metamorphosis to heal 24 HP per hit on a bloody enemy, while Gurthang and Muramasa's maximum healing is 18HP. Mourneblade has a higher basic attack value than Gurthang, but Gurthang's command move and boost during Dark Metamorphosis both result in higher damage. It would take a substantial amount of grinding for a Muramasa to exceed +36 ATK, meaning that Mourneblade is the better sword for actual use; in addition, it has the advantage of being one-handed as opposed to the two-handed Muramasa.
The Mourneblade can only be obtained as a drop item from Azaghal, the giant version of Hunting Girl found in the Reverse Colosseum and Death Wing's Lair.

Trivia
- The Mourneblade is a soul-feasting sister-sword to the more famous Stormbringer sword in Michael Moorcock's novels. Like its sister, it is a sentient demonic sword that can bring its wielder strength and vitality from slain foes.
