Mechanical Water Mines were a common enemy in the first underwater stage depicted in a Castlevania game, which was in the NES parody game Akumajō Special: Boku Dracula-kun. These water mines were later re-imagined as spiky sea urchin enemies, making their first appearance in the underwater areas of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, where they were given the name Needles.
Water Mines are mostly stationary, although they bob up and down slightly. When attacked, they explode sending shrapnel in a radial pattern.
These enemies cannot move and for the most part they serve only as obstacles. Its soul gives Soma the ability to place similar urchin mines in midair, which will explode upon contact.
If their behavior remains similar to their previous appearance, its soul acts however as a familiar. It allows Soma to summon three urchins which will follow him and support him wherever he goes.
They appear on the surface of the ocean in Kalidus Channel and Somnus Reef. They can also appear underwater and sometimes they may drop Salt, which is the item required to complete Aeon's "Needs More Salt" quest.
