A One-Up (or 1UP and many other variants of this stylization) is a rare item found in classic Castlevania games. It grants the player an extra life.
Description[]
One-Ups are generally categorized as hidden items that require certain actions taken by the player to appear. These usually involve destroying a specific breakable wall to find it in item form, inside of secret rooms, destroying certain candles, or can also be gained by reaching a certain amount of Score points. Picking up money bags or coins, acquiring certain valuable items, killing enemies, killing many enemies with just one use of a sub-weapon (triggering the score multiplier), or being awarded bonus points at the end of a level for the amount of time remaining on the timer, or by the amount of HP or Hearts left, are ways to increase a player's score.
Satisfying certain requirements particular to some games will also award the player with an extra life. Some examples include:
- In Castlevania: The Adventure, refraining from hitting the first candle in the game will make one of the candles prior to the second rope to contain a 1Up.
- In Super Castlevania IV, one is housed inside a breakable right wall in Stage 6 in an area after passing the secret room but before reaching the space near the boss (after several Ectoplasm when walking rightward).
- In Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and its two remakes, Castlevania: Dracula X and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, the player will receive an extra life if they finish a stage with a full HP bar (note that it's not enough just managing to not get hit by the area boss with an already non-full HP bar). A 1up is always housed inside the engine of the Ghost Ship and is dropped once it is destroyed.
