Richter Mode - 01

Richter Mode in Symphony of the Night.

Richter Mode is a hidden alternate mode available in some games in the Castlevania series where it is possible to play as the powerful vampire hunter Richter Belmont. This mode is usually unlocked once the game has been completed in Normal Mode and can be accessed either by inputting a special code in the Name Entry Screen or simply by selecting the option to start the game in this mode once it becomes available.

Game specific information

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Main article: Richter Belmont/Symphony of the Night

After beating the game with Alucard, a new game can be started with Richter Belmont as the new protagonist by entering the name "RICHTER" in the Name Entry Screen. The player is then able to play as Richter through the entire game until they face Shaft.

This mode lacks a storyline and it's not considered to take part in the accepted canon. Likewise, certain areas of the map (such as rooms behind grates) cannot be accessed in this mode due to them requiring specific abilities only available to Alucard in the standard game.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Richter Mode pairs Richter Belmont with Maria Renard, allowing the player to switch between the two by utilizing the Partner System of this game. They also gain experience and level-up (although due to the lack of an in-game pause menu for this mode, the former is absent from view), and can acquire the HP Max Up and MP Max Up upgrades where they're found. Note that neither of the two gain Skill Points for weapon mastery, thus their sub-weapons cannot be upgraded. However, in the North American and original Japanese versions of the game, Richter can start with a mastered Dagger and/or Holy Book through a glitch. The player can select among their available sub-weaponry by pressing the SELECT button.

Dead Cells

It is possible to play as Richter Belmont in the Return to Castlevania expansion to the game Dead Cells. After encountering Richter in a certain place in the true Dracula's Castle, play can continue for a while as Richter.

Trivia

  • In Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Richter Mode is misspelled as "RICHITER" in the mode selection screen. This was fixed in the European version.
  • In the same game, Maria's Genbu is the only ability in this mode that provides statistic boosts when activated (MND Boost and CON Boost at the same time). Another of her special abilities is the fact she regains MP very fast compared to Richter. Richter's is about normal speed for regeneration, but Maria's is approximately five times as fast.
