The Rock Castle is a location in Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge.

Overview[]

A castle erected among a complex of underground caverns. The walls of this apparently thousands old edification bear drawings and hieroglyphs of what presumably was an ancient and long forgotten civilization. The first chambers of this stage are inhabited by Mud Men, which drop from the ceiling in liquid form and materialize as humanoid monsters when they land, as well as Bats hanging from the ceilings.

The lower sections of this area are mainly comprised by a series of long tunnels bearing several holes on their walls, from which groups of Rats jump out and start leaping around in an attempt to ambush Christopher and overwhelm him with their numbers (these enemies are reminiscent of the Under Moles that previously appeared as part of a collective boss fight in Castlevania: The Adventure).

Other areas worth mentioning are trap rooms filled with spikes that come out of the walls and which must be used as stepping platforms, as well as others where giant spiked platforms will periodically move up and down.

Further into the level are the innermost caves, whose main source of light are the candles affixed to their walls. Should the player destroy all candles onscreen, the entire area will darken completely and then the initially passive Beetles will start moving around, so care should be taken when entering these areas, lest the player ends up unnecessarily making things harder for themself. This is especially important, as then they won't be able to see the many endless pits scattered around. As long as there's still at least one candle onscreen, the area will remain lit.

Near the end of this level and right before entering the antechamber that leads to the area boss, the player will have to fend off a Merman miniboss.

The boss of this stage is the Iron Doll, a hulking and heavy armored draconian warrior wielding a long scimitar. He initially slowly paces forward while periodically swinging his sword. However, after sustaining enough damage, his armor will break apart and now he'll become much quicker and agile, and will start leaping all over the room while firing energy projections from his blade.

This is the primary boss of Rock Castle. It is slow and heavily armored at first, but when you've caused enough damage, it will drop its armor and come after you faster and more ferociously than ever. Rock Castle
