The alternate path through Stage 3 of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood is called Release from the Thirst for Blood or Let Thy Soul Be At Peace.... It is a graveyard and cavern stage.
Overview[]
The area begins at the outside of a swamp with a shadowy caped figure in the background. Many Bats will appear to pester the two heroes. Atop a large hill is a gravestone that when pushed leftward enough will have the hero fall into a small cache containing multiple candles, one of which possessed a 1-up (Large Heart if the 1-up was previously obtained without exiting or clearing the stage). The exit to this cave lies below, placing the heroes directly into the mudslide. Within a short distance east, they will encounter a Giant Ghost. Defeating it, the hero then travels further into a cave filled with mudslides and rocky platforms. A breakable wall is on an upper portion of the area.
Through an East door lies a long, cavernous hall. The hero will eventually find a stairwell upward leading to the normal path, or they can ignore it temporarily and continue moving East to reach a dead-end with another Grave Keeper enemy and a small cavern filled with hidden collectibles. Up the stairwell leads to a higher second hall housing spiked balls and pits leading back to the lower hall. The spiked ball and chains constantly raise and lower via a machine overhead, though one of the balls has broken free of the machine and rests nearby. When a spiked ball is at its lowest point, striking the gear or chain will cause the spiked ball to detach and fall into the pit below it. If the second ball is detached, its fall will crack open a small pit in the lower floor. This pit can be dropped into, revealing an exit into the game's lower pathway and boss. One must watch out when dropping in as the spiked ball still rests at the bottom of the fall. Continuing on the higher path and avoiding the pits will eventually reach a door West into the upper cavern's final regions.
Through the door lies another stairwell and a first encounter with the Dead Man's Hand. Bats will resume their annoyance as the hero climbs upward. Up top lies a long mudslide filled cavernous hall complete with more Tombstones and White Dragons. A small upper pathway can be taken to avoid most of the swamp below. One White Dragon will guard the final doorway leading back into the Castle's grounds.
Version differences[]
In The Dracula X Chronicles, a cutscene will play once the hero reaches the Giant Ghost's arena: as the hero is walking, multiple purple souls appear and gather above the hero, forming the giant skull. The skull soon appears more solid, and it opens its eyes to direct its gaze toward the hero below it.
