Not to be confused with Rosaly.

The Rosary, also referred to as Rosario or simply Cross, is a recurring special item in the Castlevania series. It is either a cross or a crucifix attached to a string usually made of beads. It annihilates all minor opponents onscreen upon pickup.

Origins[]

The Holy Rosary (/ˈroʊzəri/; Latin: rosarium, in the sense of "crown of roses" or "garland of roses"), also known as the Dominican Rosary, or simply the Rosary, refers to a set of prayers used in the Catholic Church, as well as to the string of knots or beads used to count the component prayers. This string generally has either a cross or crucifix attached to it and is usually worn wrapped around a person's wrist, or it can also come in the form of a necklace. When referring to the prayer, the word is usually capitalized ("the Rosary", as is customary for other names of prayers, such as "the Lord's Prayer", and "the Hail Mary"); when referring to the beads, it is written with a lowercase initial letter ("a rosary bead").

The prayers that comprise the Rosary are arranged in sets of ten Hail Marys, called decades. Each decade is preceded by one Lord's Prayer ("Our Father") and traditionally followed by one Glory Be. Many Catholics also choose to recite the "O my Jesus" prayer after the Glory Be, which is the most well-known of the seven Fatima Prayers. During recitation of each set, thought is given to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which recall events in the lives of Jesus and of Mary. Five decades are recited per rosary. Rosary beads are an aid toward saying these prayers in the proper sequence.

Over more than four centuries, several popes have promoted the Rosary as part of the veneration of Mary in the Catholic Church, and consisting essentially in meditation on the life of Christ. The rosary also represents the Catholic emphasis on "participation in the life of Mary, whose focus was Christ", and the Mariological theme "to Christ through Mary".

General description[]

Rosaries in Castlevania, Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV, Chronicles, Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, will destroy all enemies on the screen when picked up. The Gold Cross has a similar effect in Vampire Killer, while the Silver Cross prevents enemies from respawning.

It is known as "The Cross" or the "Magic Cross" in the Western release of Simon's Quest, where it is needed in order to access Dracula's Castle via the West Bridge. It can be obtained by defeating Vampira in the Laruba Mansion.

An alternate version of the rosary appears in Castlevania: Bloodlines, called the Mirror of Truth, which also has the ability to destroy all enemies onscreen when picked up.

Rosaries also appear as equipable accessories in some games, such as Dawn of Sorrow and Harmony of Despair. Silver Crosses also appear as a Cross sub-weapon in Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Castlevania it's possible to change the memory value $15B to 0A which allows the player to use The Rosary as a Sub-Weapon. It kills everything on-screen and costs 5 hearts. The fact that it seems to be a fully finished object implies it was probably meant to be used as a Sub-Weapon originally but was changed late during development.
    • Similarly in Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, by using cheats (code: 20B64918 270F003B), the Rosario can be obtained as a consumable item that appears in the player's inventory and it even has its own description. It can defeat most bosses in one use, although it requires many uses to defeat the Forgotten One's first phase and the Maggots aren't affected by it. It also doesn't affect Walter Bernhard during his boss fight until he has already being hit by the whip at least once (apparently, as using the Vampire Killer is scripted in that fight).
  • In Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, where damage value is visible, picking up a Rosario will display as dealing 9,999 damage to enemies.
