The Rune Sword is one of Alucard's Throwing Swords that appear in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It is a flying rune-inscribed sword.

The Rune Sword is a rare drop from the Dodo Bird in the Reverse Entrance, in a room adjacent to the room which contains Mermen in the normal castle. It is a large thrown sword which leaves a trail behind it tracing the German word "VERBOTEN" ("forbidden"); it can be thrown while moving and passes through walls and obstacles, and has one of the highest attack bonuses for a one-handed weapon in the game.

The Rune Sword may at first appear inferior to the double attack of the Heaven Sword, but this is misleading since the ATK +50 Heaven Sword attack requires both swords, while two ATK +40 Rune Swords can be thrown at the same time. Rune Swords have twice the DEF penalty of the Heaven Sword, but in exchange have just under twice the basic attack power.

While the Rune Sword is a powerful and useful weapon, the fact that there is only one Dodo Bird in the entire game makes acquiring even one Rune Sword a rather time-consuming enterprise, while acquiring two is on par with grinding for two Rings of Varda from the single Paranthropus in the Colosseum. The sheer rarity of the Rune Sword compared to certain other weapons (Valmanway, Fist of Tulkas, Mourneblade, etc.) as well as its only drop being way off to one side of the Inverted Castle makes it more trouble to get than it can really be considered worth.
