For the witch in Harmony of Dissonance also called "Siren", see Aliorumnas.

The Siren is an enemy in the Castlevania series. They are beasts whose beautiful singing voices have the power to mesmerize.

Origins[]

Siren - 01

Attic funerary statue of a siren playing on a tortoiseshell lyre.
(c. 370 BC)

In Greek mythology, sirens were dangerous creatures who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.

In early Greek art, sirens were represented as birds with large women's heads, bird feathers, and scaly feet. Later, they were represented as female figures with bird legs, with or without wings, and playing a variety of musical instruments, especially harps. Later sirens were sometimes depicted as beautiful women, whose bodies, not only their voices, were seductive.

Perhaps the most well known passage where sirens make an appearance in classic Greek literature takes place in Homer's Odyssey. Odysseus was curious as to what the sirens' song was like, and so, on the advice of Circe, he had all of his sailors plug their ears with beeswax and ordered them to leave him tied tightly to his ship's mast, no matter how much he would beg. When he heard the sirens' beautiful song, he ordered the sailors to untie him, but for all answer they bound him even tighter. When they had passed out of earshot, Odysseus demonstrated with his frowns that he was out of the sirens' spell and could finally be released. The sirens were fated to die if someone heard their singing and escaped them, and as such, they flung themselves into the water and perished after Odysseus passed by.

Appearances[]

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon[]

First appearance of Sirens in the series. They are just a palette swap of common Harpies, although with increased stats and attack power. They appear in advanced areas of the game, but other than that, they have the same attack patterns than their lesser sistren.

Sirens once again appear as human and bird hybrids like they did in Circle of the Moon, and similarly, they are once again palette swaps of Harpies, although their roles have been interchanged this time around, with the Siren appearing as a weaker variant first encountered as Soma makes his way from the Castle Corridor to the Dance Hall.

Gaining dominance over their soul grants Soma the Devil's Lullaby ability, which allows him to send forth musical notes that inflict Curse to enemies upon contact.
