- Not to be confused with Serpent.
The Snake is an enemy in the Castlevania series.
Description[]
While the Snake as an individual enemy has only appeared in Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, these little reptiles have appeared in several installments of the Castlevania series since the very first title. In the games, they are usually associated with Medusa; in fact, a multitude of snakes grow out from Medusa's head, making up for her hair. Medusa can detach these snakes and send them out at will to aid her in battle.
Snakes are generally very small, albeit quick and slippery, and they are often deployed continuously on the battlefield in an attempt to distract the player while they are dealing with a larger foe. In Medusa's case, they are usually thrown to the ground and then they slither across the room until they exit the screen. They are generally killed with just one hit and yield little to no experience.
In Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, snakes are once again utilized by Medusa ("Snake Man Sentinel" in Western versions) during her boss fight, although this time she can also use them as arrows which she shoots with her bow. In addition, when the battle starts, a group of snakes are initially found slithering on the floor which then proceed to converge and entangle themselves into a mass which slowly acquires the form of the Greek monster herself.
In Super Castlevania IV, snakes appear in the form of an enemy called the Viper Swarm. These are actually a multitude of snakes entangled together which are initially encountered hanging from the ceiling and which drop and slowly move toward the player when approached. The Poison Worm from Circle of the Moon is portrayed in a similar form, although as its name implies, they are worms and are poisonous to the touch.
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness marked the first and only time the Snake appeared as an enemy by its own. They are encountered slithering around in some areas within the Villa's hedge maze. When approached, they quickly lunge forward to bite the player's legs, sticking to them until manually removed and sometimes inflicting "Poison" status. As expected, they also play a significant role during Medusa's fight in that game, where the boss sends them out in great numbers to distract the player. When killed, they generally drop Red Jewels and PowerUps, which gives them a strategic usage during the boss fight as they serve as a supply source for fueling sub-weaponry and for upgrading the player's weapon.
The Tsuchinoko is a mythical snake enemy that appears in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. It rarely attacks and is often encountered digging a hole in the ground to escape from the player; due to this, its soul, V.I.P., is somewhat hard to obtain.
